The Iceman Cometh
X3’s Ashmore Picked as Top Male Breakout on Fandango Summer Hot List

Shawn Ashmore Interview by Kim Morgan Fandango Film Commentator

Tens of thousands of moviegoers responded to a nationwide survey to determine Fandango's First Summer Hot List, a ranking of stars most likely to draw fans to the movies this summer. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest's Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley led the way as the top established stars – and Canadian-born actor Shawn Ashmore, best known as “Iceman” in the X-Men movies, was selected as the top male breakout star. Ashmore talked to Fandango’s Kim Morgan about X-Men: The Last Stand and what it’s like to be a superhero at home.

1. How do you feel about being anointed as the king of “The Breakouts” on the Fandango Summer Hot List?

It’s quite an honor. I knew the new X-Men movie was hotly anticipated, but I didn’t know it would be this crazy. It's nice to be recognized by the fans.

2. What's the relationship status between your character, Iceman and Rogue (Anna Paquin) in X-Men: the Last Stand?

As you'll see in the movie, love between two superheroes is as hard as ever, especially when you have trouble touching each other. They're still very much together and working it out.

3. You have a hostile relationship with Pyro (Fire and Ice!). Do you come to blows in The Last Stand?

It is a major showdown – and it was very tough to film – but I won't go into all the details for those who haven't seen it, as I don't want to give it away.

4. Is there going to be an X4?

It's still too early to tell. I heard that a Fandango survey said that 96% of moviegoers are interested in another X-Men movie -- and that 60% of them said they’d like to see a storyline developed with the younger X-Men characters – and so it’s always rewarding to hear that you have a following.

5. You get to work with Rebecca Romijin, Halle Berry and Famke Janssen (who were both Bond women), Anna Paquin, Ellen Page and Olivia Williams--do your friends ever get jealous?

Yes, I think my friends are a little jealous. It's not just that I get to play a superhero in the movies, but I also get to work with great ladies. It’s a pretty cool job, but someone has to do it.

6. What does your family think about your mega success?

They think it's great. I'm lucky that my family still treats me like a regular guy – and they remind me if I let it get to my head.

7. Do you still have to take out the garbage when you're at home?

Yup, I always take out the garbage and help with the dishes. Even if you're a superhero, some things never change – and I like it that way.

8. Describe your ideal moviegoing experience.

It would be watching Sergio Leone's classic spaghetti western The Good, the Bad and the Ugly with Clint Eastwood on the big screen, with a large popcorn and a large water.

9. Describe your worst moviegoing experience.

I’m a big Lord of the Rings fan, and I’ll never forget going to see The Two Towers in Toronto, near my hometown. I was there by myself, and some crazy homeless person was yelling at me – but I stuck it out because I really wanted to see the film.

10. If you could have one mutant ability in real life, what would it be?

I’d be very happy to have Iceman’s powers – sometimes I wish I could have the power to freeze people who talk on their cell phones during the movies. There's really nothing like seeing a great film on the big screen with a respectful audience.

Ashmore is a pretty cool guy...

It would kick ass to have him and Anna, Ellen, Ben, Daniel all come back for a spin off of the younger team.

Anna sounds pretty pissed about X3 (and she hsould be) so I doubt you'll see her back for a fourth go then.

That would be amazing...especially if, due to the lack of elders to teach, a certain Frost was brought in to teach them.

ESPECIALLY if they were to go into the Emma/Iceman relationship.

I forgot where i read it, comics2film.com i think, but it was a interview with Anna, Shawn, and Pyro.

They asked anna would she come back for a 4th movie, and she said hell yeah...

im to lazy to go search for it, but it was posted last week.

What interview were your reading?

Yeah, Shawn's cool, but looks really thin...

Cool interview. Hey Snwboarder88 is it okay if I post this in the Shawn Ashmore/Iceman thread?

god I hate this guy, shawn the tool ashmore

What's he done to upset you for heaven's sake? A tool? Explain!

This guy has played two of my favorite fictional characters and I haven't liked him as either.
:(

He comes off as sort of a young cyclops in these movies, and it's boring because in the comics he would always clash with Cyclops. He was the cynical bad boy before logan came around.

but he isn't that bad, just meh. He's older Ice man with early Icemans powers.

Alot of that has to do with the writing...

Iceman was written dull in the movies. You can't blame Ashmore for that.

I don't. He looks the part well enough. I just find it funny that he played my favorite character in both X men and Animorphs and managed to make the characters my least favorite in the movie/show.

But then the Animorphs show sucked anyway, and he is getting better in the movies.

We need to see him get more comfortable with his powers, in all three movies he seems at ease when using them for personal use, i.e. the Rose, the soft drink and the freezing of the fountain, but in battle he seems so unsure of himself. With the exception of the "I'm so cool aren't I kitty" look he gives in the Danger Room. It works in the movies, I just hope to see him advance even further, and perhaps faster. At this rate it will be X men 6 before he is able to even make an Ice slide.

and he needs a little more of a personality. They keep bringing him back, make it more worthwhile.

Or Maybe... it's all in your head

He was badass in X3.
