Atari looking to create PC based gaming console

So they want to go up against valve and it's steam link? that is is interesting. have to see what they come up with .

So will there be an alternative service to Steam on here or is it just an emulator box?

If I had to make a guess, based on the information they've provided? It'll be an Nvidia SHIELD clone: set top box, Android-based, with media streaming functions and the ability to download games from a proprietary storefront. It'll probably have a lot of emphasis on Atari games, though whether this is anything special beyond "has them", and whether it goes beyond the 2600, who knows.

Why this is supposed to be a compelling product is unknown.

your correct the gamer news outlets that explained on video and other wise said this it's more of cross between the nes classic ,snes , eta and what the Uya was supposed to be.

as example below in the rundown video from last night. time stamp @ 5:29/8:21 blow.

Eh, that sounds like a complete misunderstanding of what the NES Classic et al actually *are*. Pretty much having an ethernet port in the first place disqualifies it from being anywhere in the same neighborhood.

the point it they said it's mix/ cross between case. they are adding in more via the ethernet past what in the system already has . which is why they and other outlets mentioned the u ya (oooya) part. it wouldn't make sense to say it's part this with another seprate thing other wise.

it be just one thing.

That doesn't make it a mix between an NES Classic and an Ouya, though. It just makes it a themed Ouya. Fundamental to the plug-and-play console is that it is just that: plug-and-play. No connectivity, no stores, no digital purchases, just a self-contained device that does one thing.

yeah that is true but maybe they are looking at it with some certain player's that don't care for the feature like former worker Scott c jones in EPN.tv's case or other gamer new out lets that always say they don't care for online. and will play the games there already on the system. and there some people that might have the worst internet possible that might pick this up regardless and pick it for the game available on the system already and might not go further with Ethernet feature. yea it's weird. but not impossible. I wouldn't worry about it too much ether.

People will do what they want with it

Well, that pretty much answers that: a misbegotten device that is going to fizzle for lack of a viable market niche.

lol I just realised that the second shout out I've had from vic inthe same year. I'm ballistic_z.

I'm still not sure what this thing is. :funny:

That's okay, because I doubt Atari is sure, either.

I kind of wonder if its essentially the merger of two *different* internal efforts to revive the Atari brand: one internal group wanted to go first party retro-console, one group wanted to go set-top streaming box Shield clone. Now they make one device that probably won't do either function well, and costs too much.

If they really were serious about this? They should go the "premium retro" route. Forget about playing modern games and serving other all-purpose PC functions. Just make a high quality, aesthetically appealing retro device, for an affordable price, with as large a *curated* selection of games as possible. And to make it distinct from all the existing Atari devices? Go beyond the 2600. Include games from *all* Atari platforms, including the 7800, the ST computers, and even the Jaguar. Sure, its a bit more complexity, but you should be able to emulate all those platforms on cheap off-the-shelf hardware these days.

End of year 2019....so they say.

Who the **** is this for again?

The same people who thought that Steam or Ouya would be a success.

The same people who thought that Steam or Ouya would be a success.
If Atari (Infogrames) still made hot AAA or AA exclusives, I could see it being somewhat a success, but it looks like they're just giving us a PC with an Atari 2600 emulator.

Ouya and Steam Machine which hasn't taken off either despite the size of Valve.
Those idiots should have kept it at one Steam Machine per year or gaming PC refresh cycle, instead they flooded the market with different manufacturers. But Steam OS is a hit right? :o
