Yeah that’s a good way to look at it. Though I would argue that there are actually some really good characters in Elder Scrolls Online like Naryu and Cadwell (I guess it’s more Zenimax than BGS but I’m not totally clear on how that all works over there). They are certainly a step up from the one-note characters in Skyrim (aside from my bae Serana of course). But yeah, there isn’t much moral complexity there; you’re basically just given the chance to do the “right” thing or die lol. And it’s an MMO so you can only play it for so long before it all starts to feel a bit stale, but I still really enjoyed some of the bigger quest lines.

Anyway though; yeah comparing anything to BG3 probably isn’t going to be fair for quite a while because BG3 raised the bar so high. I almost feel bad for whatever studio attempts to take on BG4 or whatever the next game in the Forgotten Realms universe is.

Yeah, I was going to say that Serana was THE character in Skyrim. She was awesome. Shoulda let us marry her and have more story regarding curing her vampirism.

It’s worth jumping into if you need a new (old) game to tide you over. The main quest is really cool, as are the ones that take place in Vaardenfell and Morrowind. I also liked the Elseweyr and Skyrim ones (the latter is really cool if you’re into the vampire stuff). And they have a pretty impressive voice cast (John Cleese, Alfred Molina, Kate Beckinsale, Peter Stormare). The combat is also better than in Skyrim; at least it doesn’t feel like you’re just swinging your sword in the air and hoping you hit something lol.

Obsidian also revealed what the game’s next big update will entail. In addition to a photo mode and new game plus mode, players will also get access to new character races, including dwarves, and an additional weapon type. New game plus mode, meanwhile, will reset players’ level back to one but let them keep all of their gear from the previous playthrough as well as explore new enemy modifiers. The new races were the real heavy lift, however.
