Backwards Compatibility: Should it always be necessary?

You people are funny. My original assessment stands as a bunch of old folks standing around thinking they know it all, while stuck in the past.

Your retro-gaming needs will be served...but not necessarily in the next generation console format.

thats money to be made which a console maker would be too stupid to ignore. Expect to see all future consoles to include a controller to support that. Even if all next gen games were completely motion controlled, theres no reason why the console itself would not have any support for a controller. It makes no sense why they wouldnt for reasons already stated

Oh, ye who are young will lead us to the future, eh? Well, at the very least thanks for showing that you have nothing solid to say on the subject. You just throw out the old, 'The new washes away the old absolutely in a flash second' mentality the young tend to gravitate towards and would rather just say, 'lulz old people' as opposed to actually addressing points being made. I guess we old fogies are simply lost in a daze, our judgments clouded as sight fails, our hearing fading, and our hearts in the past.

PFFT, bet you guys still wipe your ass with toilet paper too. In the future we use 3 shells. (0 points for getting the reference)

A bunch of old folks....wow.

Consoles are NOT doing away with controllers after this gen, they just aren't. Just as they aren't doing away with physical drives like so many digital download enthusiast think they are. In a few generations, for the PS6 and Xbox 389948390, maybe. We're not at the point where we can completely switch over, and nor are we at the point where consumers want controllers done away with. Some might want, and champion consoles without controllers, but the vast majority still want controllers.

Honestly, there's not much I can say that Havok and Teardrop haven't said, but remember that you don't speak for everyone. As much as you think "everyone" will think next gen that controlling camera angles with your thumb is horrible and boring (which IMO it isn't, it feels as natural as moving your character with your thumb, or making him punch or jump with a thumb), most ppl don't feel that way. In all honesty, I think it will be much more of a pain to have to wave your arm like a mad man to make the camera angle change rather than a small twitch of the thumb. I think it'll be far less fun to have to clear out a large area in my living room to walk around in circles as the camera tracks me to make my character walk rather than setting on a couch surrounded by surround sound speakers and slightly dimmed lights for a good setting (BTW, not saying the walking thing as an anti-excersize deal, I hit the gym when I want to work out, when I play games I want to sit down and enjoy the moment). Things like camera tracking are only starting starting to hit they're stride, not taking over.
