CSN @ NEWSARAMA: BAGLEY TO LEAVE ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN

With Ultimate Spider-Man #100 due any week now and the record-setting Ultimate Spider-Man #103 establishing Brian Bendis & Mark Bagley as the record-holding creative team at Marvel (having produced more consecutive issues of any superhero series in Marvel history, surpassing the 102-issue Stan Lee-Jack Kirby run on Fantastic Four), it appears that the end of an era is soon approaching. Mark Bagley has confirmed his plans to leave the series after Ultimate Spider-Man #110.

“I’ve had an incredible time with Ultimate Spider-Man,” Bagley told CSN, “but I don’t want to stagnate. Right now, Brian and I are doing some of the best work we’ve ever done on the comic, and I think it’s best for me to leave while we’re on the top of our game.”

While Bagley is moving on to other projects, Bendis will remain with Ultimate Spider-Man, although Marvel has not chosen an artist to take over the title. Of course, there are very few artists working in comics today who can match Bagley’s prodigious output; the artist has produced as many as eighteen issues per year and has still found time to do additional work for Marvel.

So what’s next for Bagley? “I’m not sure what I’ll be doing next,” he said. “I’m talking with Marvel, and they have several books they’re evaluating to see just where they feel I will fit best.” Once that decision is made, of course, you’ll hear about it in CSN!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
I can't see anyone taking his place.
He has the most distinctive look and feel to his art, anthing that follows will be a step down.

I just hope they don't bring ramos in, how that guy continues to get work astounds me.

Heh, I feel the EXACT same way about Bags, and I love Ramos. Well, I guess opinions are like a-holes, everyone has one! Lol

I don't get it where Bags says he doesn't want to get stagnant, he's been on Spidey books since, what, 1993? He had short break, but he didn't do anything in between! Prior to that, his only work for Marvel was The New Warriors. It's taken him 13 years to want to stop drawing the same people! Lol

Seriously though, whether I like his art or not, I have to respect someone who stuck to a book like this for this long, hardcore stuff!

I just hope whatever he does next will inspire him to go in different direction. He's had the same style for so long, his people are starting to look real similar. Anyone see his Tony Stark in Ultimate Iron Man? Looked just like Peter Parker. I reckon Bags has it in him to do something wild, his work in the early 90's was hyper detailed, if he uses his skills, I think he could do something really fresh

I'm sad about Bagley leaving, he is the best of the Spidey artists.

Bring in Brooks to replace I say.

If they ever bring in Ramos that'll be all I need to drop th' damn book. Bendis' writin' is just blowin' chunks.

Sucky, sucky, sucky :down

He really is the best Spidery artist round, the USM will never quite be the same.

While this is sad, it is to be expected. 110 issues is a hell of a run on any title...especially without having a fill-in artist at ANY pointon the run...not to mention the fact that he kept the book coming out on a regular basis without ONE late book (to my recollection). He isn't my favorite Spidey artist ever, but he is DAMN good, and he has the most consistent style of any Spidey artist ever. When you see a Bagley Spider-man, you know it.

I wish him the best. He will be sorely missed on this title.

And yes, Mark Brooks would be a decent successor.

only brooks can do it. while his art is not as amazing as bagleys, he can do a decent job. and im pretty sure he´ll come in eventually, seeing him doing the annuals and stuff. i just hope 110 is the best comic ever written, so that bagley can go out with a BANG and i hope we will see him again, maybe doing the annuals?

Ultimate Spider-man won't be quite as good, in my opinion, with his leaving. Bagley is part of what makes Ultimate amazing.

On the same notion....he is part of what makes/made it so good...a writer and artist that sticks with their book for the long run...so i appluad him/them on that.

Honestly, Ultimate SM wouldn't have ever truly gotten off the ground the way it did, or be what it is now, if they had both signed on for just a 12 issue run/event.

Ultimate goes to show and stands as a great example of how successful comics can be, if done the old school way without the "Events" and "Shock and awe" and "12 issue runs by writers/artists". Or relaunches, for that matter. I hope anyway...that they don't get some big new name artist and relaunch a whole new exciting direction for USM with a new #1. Been there, done that.

Thanks Mark Bagley for all your hard work.

This sucks. The only guy i can see replacing him would be Brooks. Still a step down, but i'd rather have him then anyone else.

So Mark is leaving all Spider-Man titles for good? :(

I vote for my #1 fave of all time for Spidey: Erik Larsen!

Bags is #2, imo. Those 2 artists are the best Spider-man artists I've ever seen. :)

Bagley is right up there in my top 3 Spidey artists so it's a shame to see him go after issue #110. :(

I'd like Mark Brooks to take over too, but I don't know how much of a good idea it would be considering that he is known for being late on books, something that I would hate having to get used to after having Bagley churn out issue after issue.

Brooks style is so close, he would be perfect to replace Bagley.

Now if we can only get a new writer.;)

What's weird to me are that there are people who are surprised about this. I always remember Bagley saying that he wouldn't be sticking around too much longer once he and Bendis broke the record.

I think his run has been awesome and he deserves to bow out of this book. Well over five years of working on the same book, and mostly putting it out bi-weekly. #110 issues in a row, without any type of guest artist or even too many delays for that matter. Not to mention the fact that his work is usually TOP NOTCH.

No, there is not a true replacement for Mark Bagley on this book. But we'll obviously be getting one anyway and it'll probably be Mark Brooks. Though if I ran things at Marvel John Romita Jr. would replace Bags and that man could fill Bagley's shoes and then some.

Now it would be great if he joined one of the 616 spidey titles...AMZ maybe:spidey:

Yeah, this sucks. While I am huge fan of his, he was drawing ASM when I was 10, and for a quite a number of years after that. He was to me the face of Peter for a long long time. He's not my fave by far, JRjr has those rights, but hes going to be missed. However due to the fact that Bendis' writing on this book is out of control due to the size of load he has taken on at marvel, it will be nice to have a change of pace. The problem is, ATM i can't think of anyone who would be able to keep up with the art duties for this book who would be a good fit. The last thing I want to see is this book going to 6 month cycles for the art. I hate that.

On well, hope to see him pick up ASM. Going back to drawing an older Peter, and a bulkier Spidey, those are some of the best.

For Mark Bagley's sake, I really hope he's not drawing Spider-Man next.

If he is, I shall send him my condolensces. He deserves a break from all things Spider-Man.

Ow. I feel like my dog just died... I guess I'm going for Brooks like we all discussed in the USM thread before... I don't know if JRJR's a serious candidate but I'm more than okay with him as well. As long as we get someone who's going to be on it for awhile... I don't want to see a new artist every arc. I always liked USM's consistency.

They should get the guy who did the art for the USM Annual - the one where he went on his first date with Kitty Pryde and stuff.

Oh.... don't get me wrong, I don't hope the NEXT thing he does is a Spidey book. Let him go do, I dont know, Hulk or something for a while, a few 6 issue shots or something to get it out of his system. But yeah, long term I would rather have him on ASM the the mash of randomness thats been going throgh that book lately.

Yeah thats Mark Brooks

This is unfortunate news. I really like Bagely's art, and he's one of the main reasons I really started collecting USM. I hope he continues to be successful. I kind of wish, actually, that he would move over to DC so I could buy his stuff again.

:(

This is really sad news for all USM fans & Bagley fans in general...but we all knew this day would come. Having said that, I'd just like to say a HUGE thank you to Mr Bagley for the years of dedication & hardwork he put into that series & I look forward to seeing him on something new in the near future. :)
