I'm betting it's PCP. Bath Salts are definitely bad for you, but as far as I know they wouldn't cause this (at least not them alone). Lots of meth in Florida as well, so it wouldn't be a stretch to think those could be involved either.
Most states are pushing now for legislation against Bath Salts. Classic law enforcement and or media tactic is to link a high profile drug related crime to an individual on them committing a henious crime. As my uncle once tried to tell me "I know some police who investigated shootings where 'pot was involved'". Yes - that means they mostly likely found some riffling through his things. Doesn't mean it cause the shooting.
It's the same as when they blame a school shooting on violent video games. For example in Columbine, the two shooters were given all sorts of excuses backed up by nothing. Video games, bullying (they actually went to prom with dates a week earlier with a crowd of 12 friends), and literature...when in reality both suffered from untreated psychological disorders that the parents just kind of ignored.
Face eating is not a reaction of bath salts. From descriptions I'd bet some PCP was involved, making him immune to pain. At least from what I've read that would seem consistent. No drug though can convince you to eat faces, although certain individuals can be prone to face eating with the right drug cocktail I imagine. Friends and family, if this guy had any, certainly should've noticed something. I'll have to see what they say about the guy personally, but I'd imagine there is more too this than he did a drug.
