Batman Beats Superman in the Marketplace

Despite their long history as super-friends, comic book fans have been known to debate: Who would win in a fight? The all-powerful Superman or the ever-ingenious Batman? This week we may have gotten the answer. On Monday the $1 million sale of a copy of Action Comics No. 1, which features the first appearance of Superman, set a record for the sale of a comic book. But it was short-lived. On Thursday a copy of Detective Comics No. 27, the first appearance of Batman from 1939, sold for $1,075,500. Take that, Man of Steel! Heritage Auctions, which sold the Batman comic, has a video presentation on this copy of Detective Comics No. 27, that includes a closer look at its cover, above, and some of the interior panels. Like the buyer of Action Comics No. 1 — and Superman and Batman — the new owner of Detective Comics No. 27 would like to keep his identity secret.

In 100 years it will be the other way 'round. Superman is a much more important character than Batman. Batman is basically a rip-off.

Is this supposed to be surprising? Superman is at his lowest popularity level, and Batman at his highest. Take that into account along with the fact that the end costs were so close, and that tells you something about The Man of Steel.

It's funny all the people defending Superman like the fact that his book sold for less means anything. Don't be so defensive. I personally like Batman more and would disagree that Siperman is "more important" as a super hero. but it mostly comes down to subjectivity.

Superman more or less started the superhero genre. If it wasn't for that and the introduction of Robin the boy wonder. Batman would have been one of those 30s pulp vigilantes forgotten in the past.

But hey look someone paid 1 million for an issue thats a ripoff to Shadow's first comic issue. Congratulations to him.

I didn't say he was. the two are not mutually exclusive. From a cultural stand point both are interesting and important. But if you want to look at it in terms of founding the superhero comic genre I will conceed superman was there first, but that's more of a credit to the creator than anything else.

Hahahahahaha I say that same thing to my brother (he collects baseball cards)I feel like people almost do it for their ego. SO they can be like, "yeah, that's me with that rare issue. I'm super cool, whatever."

Its insane really, seeing as how last year the most expensive comic sold was $300,000.

Evan as a batman fan action comic should be more valuable it is the one that started it all.

But i really hope these guys are buying out of pure passion cuz these prices they paid are so inflated that once the mainstream superhero craze dies down in a few years there's no way they would be able to sell those for any profit.

IMO Superman & Batman are equals.

Same here, I could never argue which is better with anybody because I love both characters like they were real people and family members of mine. They are after all collectively my favorite character in all of fiction and not just comic books. I do find myself defending Superman more often than not though but only because millions of people are grossly misinformed about the character. Many rely on a classic but yet outdated and not accurate representation of him that graced the big screen in 1978 for their knowledge, and not the actual source material.
