Batman & the Mad Monk thread

It's got both good and bad merits.

On one hand, it is a good story, and the art is amazing.

On the other hand...the fact that it's using the regular post-Crisis Batman just takes away from what I liked about the first stories. I mean, their charm is in the fact that it features the whacked-out, homicidal Batman.

But why would you just want a reprint of those stories?

This way you have your whacked out, homocidal Batman in the original stories, and now here you have the modern version. The best of both worlds, IMO.

I hear ya--I just find it odd to see Batman face the Monster Men without mowing them away with a machine gun. :o :)

I have not read Monster Men yet, can someone give me the lowdown on what it's about??

Just read Mad Monk, it was really good. Can't wait for the next issue, looks to be even better than Monster Men.

cool issue, but the dialog was corny.....well not everyones dialog, mostly just Batman's, mostly.

Monster Men would go before Mad Monk. In the first issue of Mad Monk Batman asks Gordon the status of Hugo Strange and the supporting characters from Monster Men carried over into Mad Monk. So, Bruce Wayne is still seeing Julie Madison.

Read this today and it was definitely a good start. Loved the Catwoman confrontation at the very beginning.

I really hope that Wagner just keeps continuing doing these types of miniseries. Well, however long he wants to. :o

Is this going to be collected together with Monster Men?

I wouldn't count on it. DC released the trade of Monster Men this past week along with the release of the first issue of Mad Monk.

I just got Monster Men today, looks pretty good, but a question though, why does both Monstermen and the first issue of Mad monk have the words dark moon rising, is this the Dark Moon Rising collection or something??

Monster Men and Mad Monk are considered part one and two of Dark Moon Rising.

Why? I haven't a clue.

I'd say only if they did an "Absolute" edition of it. Y'know, the 75 dollar things...

Storyline, great. Artwork is hideous...it distracted me through the whole issue. Faces were deformed and people looked like trolls. There was an odd 'wiggly' effect on some panels, making you wonder if your eyes were moving.

So is there going to be a part three??
Unfortunately, no.

...dude. Matt Wagner's art is fantastic. Are you sure you didn't run your issue through a dishwasher before reading it? :o

I like the look on the coroner's face when Batman walks past him. I love stuff like that.

Check name, please. That's 'dudette', bub. ;)

No, I don't dig Wagner's style, never did. I know some people like the 'rough and ugly' styles of art, but I ain't one of 'em. It reminds me of someone who draws without understanding anatomy or how bodies move. Everything is just drawn without regard to anything.

Too bad, I really liked the storyline.

LOL! Is Matt Wagner paying a homage to Neal Adams?

I'd say it's more likely Adams was paying homage to Kane, as was Wagner.

Here's what my Ultimate Guide said about the first printing -

"Bruce Wayne's fiancee, actress Julie Madison, is introudced as the Batman encounters The Monk, a werewolf-vampire."

He's got it to a 't' so far, I just hope I don't see a machine gun.

Youthink he's "rough and ugly?
I'd call guys like Eduardo Risso's art rough and ugly. Frank Miller's definitely...but Wagner's mostly cartoony and stylistic to me.

You think Risso's art is rough and ugly?

Think what you want but I intensely disagree.

So why does'nt the silly Bastard buy Monster Men and read that?? Bollocks Review!!!!!
