I'm only disappointed in that I think the character design is crap. I draw no further inference from that.
Man that sucks...

Atlantean metal? That could explain it.
Impossible!
Atlantis is supposed to be in the Atlantic and Polynesia is located in Pacific Ocean.
Could they change Arthur Curry's origin? Is he actually a Lemurian?
Perhaps it will work. Atlantis is actually connected to Lemuria in the myths.
But doesn't he look too barbaric to be a Lemurian? I've read that they were more peaceful, in contrast to the more warlike Atlanteans.
I don't.
I will always dislike the look Aquaman has in the pic. It's not what I wanted to see. You people just have to understand my opinion there
Snyder and his team lack faith in the character's ability to be badass without changing his looks that much.
Atlantis is in the Atlantic. It's Atlantis, not Pacifis.True, but is it really that impossible to change? Or that important though?
I mean, I get it why would someone want it to stay as close to comics as possible, and Arthur being from Maine is also very Lovecraftian and I like it, but one should ask - how much importance does that have and how many things that are essential to the character get lost by that change? A lot? Few? None whatsoever?
Besides, that change would make Justice League a bit more international and diverse and it is something I personally also like.
As for the "historical" setting of Atlantis, it could easily be made to be wrong, by pointing out that it wasn't an allegory and Plato indeed knew of such a place, but he either deliberately or by mistake placed it in Atlantic ocean in his work. Besides, if you ever read Plato, you must have noticed that he's often quite vague when it comes to that.

You wrote: is it really that impossible to change? Or that important though?"
Then I ask: Is it important that Aquaman is an Atlantean? Is is impossible to change?
Lemuria is THE lost continent of the Pacific (or close thereby), Atlantis is not!
Then change him to be a Lemurian!
It would have been easier to adapt the actor to the character rather than the character to the actor, but that ship appears to have sailed.
"Atlanteans" call themselves "Lemurians".... or none of the two names is the real one and Snyder will invent a new name for the kingdom that the "sea people" use among themselves.I already suggested an explanation of it being wrongly thought to be placed in Atlantic ocean. Inhabitants of Atlantis could have their own local name for the place or would still choose to call it Atlantis, as Plato used to and surface dwellers of today still do.
And they could make an amalgamation of the Atlantis and Lemuria, saying that it is in fact the same place. Two islands (well, continent in case of Lemuria) that got sunk in the sea, turning up be the one same island. It can easily be made that Plato placed Atlantis wrongly in Atlantic ocean (and named it in accordance to that) and scientific hypothesis of Lemuria was correct, but the name "Atlantis" would remain, as that's how people called the place for centuries and it stuck.
There are ways around that.
Yeah, like it's usually done.It would have been easier to adapt the actor to the character rather than the character to the actor

But Snyder and Momoa set a new standard here. Every character from now on must change for the sake of the actor.
Spider-Man will be altered to suit Lerman/Dylan/Highmore or whoever gets cast. That's how things should be done.
Really can't see how anybody can be disappointed with Aquaman's look, and thats coming from a big Aquaman fan.
It harks back to the 90s version (my personal favourite) and makes the best of what Jason Mamoa can give. If his personality is anything like the JLU animated series, I will be seriously content. In the public eye, Aquaman doesn't have the gravity that Batman or Supes have so I think they have the licence to alter what they need to. I wanted a barbaric badass Aquaman and that looks like what we're getting.
I agree to an extent. I want to see a brutle, but kingly badass- i dont feel barbaric would fit such an old and sophisticated culture that i think Aquman comes from- at least in the comics. The movie may show it differently though. Cant wait to see it!!t:
Well written statementI agree to an extent. I want to see a brutle, but kingly badass- i dont feel barbaric would fit such an old and sophisticated culture that i think Aquman comes from
They went too farYeah, the thing is, Momoa is a kind of guy that would look threatening and tough even with light blond hair and pink hair ties. They could easily make him badass and authoritative without making him overtly barbaric.
I have come to loathe the term "badass".
It basically describes what is considered powerful or impressive if you are a 13 years old.
They went too far
He could still be just as badass with the real Aquaman look.
And even with the barbaric look Aquaman actually has now, the character still could turn out to be the joke he once was in terms of uselessness and weak powerset.
When it all comes down, the true badass-ness isn't about the looks but how the character is written.

I actually think that they just effectively combined 90s Aquaman with some pacific island cultural influences rather than the extreme some people seem to be making in that he's now totally inconsistent with the character because they tried too hard to make him "badass".

just a thought, but what if this aquaman is pretty much immortal ( or close to it ) and he IS the poseidon of old that was talked about.
