Batman Year One The Animated Movie

I'm a little put off by all the complaining by some about Catwoman's cleavage. Christ man, why is it a bad thing? Who doesn't love ****? Some people are just prudish idiots.

Still not sure if I should watch this. I love the source material. I just think this is a bit pointless and I haven't been terribly interested in it.

Yeah, and it's NOTHING compared to what we see in the comics, or even in the recent videogame "Arkham City", she's ALL out.

Anyone else caught off-guard by the f-bomb dropped during Batman's narration after he took out the thugs on the fire escape?

There is no f-bomb, he just says "Amateur. Lucky amateur." And in the book it's "Lucky. Lucky amateur." I can't even picture Batman saying the f-word.

Something tells me if Frank Miller had his way, Batsey would be dropping the F bomb every 5 minutes.

I don't think a direct adapt of YO could ever be a great movie.

It's a four issue comic arc, who's plot, pacing, and even dialogue is totally different from a standard film script.

You people need to listen to Alan Moore more.

Yeah, he's so dead right that certain comics are written in a way only COMICS can do. That's not to say a comics story cannot be adapted, it just can't be literally adapted. It has to be changed to fit a film's structure of telling a story, not a comic's way.

Have to agree with CCon here, it seemed rather pointless.

Most cannot but some can.

The thing that films and comics have in common is entertainment. They're both meant to be inexpensive ways to keep an audience entertained with their stories & visuals (or art). With films people expect to see something well rounded. Let's face it, it's all that they're getting for three, four or even 8 years. Unlike the comics, you're not going to get a new issue, erm, film, every month.

There are a number of comics that could be adapted. Batman Year One is a perfect example. It has the right tone for a live action film. But they would have to focus more on Batman/Bruce Wayne, add more action (less drama), expand the story and make Catwoman's presence relevant. It could stay very true to the graphic novel however it would be more of an expanded version of the story.

Somewhat like Batman Begins, perhaps. :cwink:

While I don't think the complaints are necessarily centered around Catwoman's breasts, I think you're hitting on exactly what it is people are talking about, unconsciously.

Not at all. I was talking about an actual Year One film that expands the story from the graphic novel so it could work as a live action film. Batman Begins was a completely different story that only had elements from Year One.

Actually, watching this made me glad we didn't get a straight-up Year One live-action adaptation. I think Begins used just enough of Year One while doing its own thing and becoming more of a cinematic experience in the process. I appreciate what Goyer and Nolan did in their choices of what to include and not to include.

Batman Begins is one of my favorite comic book films. It was very faithful to the comics. The visuals were perfect. And overall it was a quality film. However I'd rather have Henri Ducard and Ra's Al Ghul be two separate people. And I could do w/out the Batsuit being analyzed. But it's hard to say that Year One wouldn't work as a live action film. With the proper adjustments it could be even better than Batman Begins.

Just finished watching it. It was very underwhelming. Could have been better, thats for sure

I just got done watching it a few minutes ago, and it wasn't bad. A couple of things were weird, like how Bruce was able to kick down a tree, but a some trouble with Selina. Maybe I'm missing something, but he must be strong as hell to put down a tree. lol And despite what I heard, his voice wasn't bad either. Nothing special, just a young Bruce.

I think Hush is very cinematic and should be next on the list to adapt.

The only thig about Hush that isn't very cinematic is how each issue features Batman facing a different villain. That "run the gauntlet" style of plotting really isn't seen in movies.

That said, I'd still like to see it for the art. :o

I think the main problem with straight adaptions of comics is that most comics are episodic which is fine because the medium is a serial format. However when adapted into film, a medium which isn't designed to have breaks, it can end up feeling very disjointed. A proper adaption would need heavy re-jiggling to work on screen. Adding a proper climax wouldn't hurt.

Currently watching. Just saw the tree scene. Is Batman Superhuman now? o_o

Haha. I always thought (even in the graphic novel) that was pretty corny.
