Ben Affleck & Ana de Armas in Deep Water

I think it looks good tbh . Ana looks great.

Yeah, it looks intriguing enough to me. And I didn't realize Lil Rel was in it, even if he is the "Black Comic Best Friend" trope. Always happy to see him.

Should have just gotten Brian De Palma for this, it's not like he's busy these days.

Looks like Gigli with a more serious tone…

Starting out at 38% on Rotten Tomatoes

Looks like the official review embargo has been lifted. 45% with 40 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Seems like it'll be settling in there, which is about what I expected. Semi-mixed reviews, watchable but that's about it.

Just finished this and I have no idea what I just watched lol

Tone was all over the place, film was building up to something that never happened and I have no idea what they were thinking with some of the character decisions, specifically for Affleck.

It was so fun to watch though - 6/10 :funny:

I expected a mediocre thriller and that's what I got. Entertained me enough and Ben was surprisingly really good in it. Better than this movie deserved at least lol

I thought, at the end, we were going to discover that Affleck was fantasizing about being married to Ana, who was actually married to one of his friends.

I always like a good thriller so I gave it a shot, even though everything was pointing to it being pretty bad. And it was. I don't know the book, but the story of the film felt like it went nowhere and Affleck was a block of wood as always. It had some good moments but overall nothing really interesting happened and I was bored.

This was a weird movie. I wasn't expecting it to be great or even good. But it was just kinda bland.

As an "erotic thriller" or whatever, it kinda failed at both

The erotic part wasn't anything special. Not that I wanted or expected adult film level stuff. But even compared to HBO, Starz, any TV MA shows or even Unfaithful which has the same director as this, this was pretty tame. Anyone hoping for Ana De Armas in a bunch of sexy moments will probably be disappointed. There are only like 3 sex scenes and all of them are pretty brief and standard. Even in the hand DJ scene that was in the teaser, I thought would happen in a crowded park and they were exhibitionists or whatever. But nope. Happens when no one's around. Pretty boring.

The thriller aspect was really bland too. I thought there was gonna be some reveal or some twist. But the movie plays our predictably even if you don't watch many movies. There were 4 ways they could've gone about it and they picked the safest and easiest route for the murder...idk if I can even call it a mystery. I wasn't shocked or thrilled by anything that happens.

And I felt like the logline kinda tricks viewers for the movie. The short synopsis makes it seem like they have a one sided open marriage and they agreed upon that. But the movie makes it pretty clear that Affleck isn't ok with Armas sleeping around, but is too wimpy to actually take a stand. Which had me questioning the whole time: why is he putting up with this?
The movie tries to say "well he's just soooo in love with her." But that never comes across in the movie with their chemistry that he actually loves her. Sure they have a kid (a really adorable kid) but even the kid didn't seem like a good enough reason. They didn't make it seem like she's so good at sex that he'd put up with it. They don't really show a reason he's so insecure that he's fine with taking it.
He basically was William H Macy in Boogie Nights and Armas is Nina Hartley...but he still Ben Affleck. In the movie universe he's still charming, tall, dark, and handsome. Plus, he's very successful. He could easily be with any woman (I thought something was going to happen with the woman he danced with). So since they never gave a good reason, I just kept wondering why is he putting up with this?

The movie plays out almost like you're reading a Wikipedia summary on a movie. Things just happen with no flow. It goes like: Cute scene with the daughter and Affleck, Affleck and Armas go to a party, Armas openly flirts and rubs all over some guy at party (and it's so cringy and not in a funny way), Affeck makes veiled threats at guy, friends go to Affleck and say "Man you're wife is wildin out," Affleck mopes, Armas' lover exits movie, then rinse and repeat. That happens like 3 times and that's basically how the plot play out until near the end.

Also it was weird how so much of the supporting cast just disappear from the movie after maybe the half way point and aren't mentioned again.

Tonally it was really weird at times. I feel like I have that complaint about so many movies nowadays.

Performances were pretty good by Affleck and de Armas. Affleck has perfected looking like a mope. Armas played the drunk party girl perfectly.
But also there were no likeable characters, except the daughter, in this movie.

I don't know why I wrote so much about this movie. It's more than this movie deserves. But it really perplexed me.
Not the worst thing I've seen and there is a little bit of fun to be had, but I'd skip it if anyone was considering watching it. If you really want to see Armas is 3 brief sexy scenarios (sorry Affleck, Wittrock, or Jacob Elordi fans, they don't really get much here in that regard) you can probably just wait until the internet puts them up, which should be pretty soon since this is on streaming.

You want to watch a good, modern erotic thriller? Watch "You" on Netflix.

That would've been something at least.

I try not to predict what's going to happen in a movie unless it's a mystery, but I thought it was going to be:
Affleck is killing them and that turns Armas on. And they're just this f-ed up, serial killer cuckhold couple.

or I didn't think this until after I wouldn't have minded if the whole movie was
Affleck killed her lover and the whole movie is about him covering his tracks. He finally gets away with no suspicion only for her to cheat again and his rage builds back up

I did not think they would go with the obvious
Affleck is the killer, Armas eventually finds out but hides it.

 This was...oof. Very repetitive too. As dumb as Vic and Melinda's characters were, they were only surpassed by...the rest of the cast of ridiculous characters and situations. Ana de Armas was game performing as Melinda but that was about it. Deep Water is like as bad as Gone Girl was good.

What was with the snails by the way? Is that from the book?
And the "F-ing autocorrect" scene was freaking hilarious

They should've sold this to Netflix. This movie is very memeable and Netflix's meme department would've made this movie a viral hit

All throughout the movie I just kept thinking of this meme(sorry Will Smith)

The very thought of "You" creeps me out, which is why I Don't watch it.

Also, the script had problems from the start, but became more and more dumb near the end.
Why would Affleck's character ever take the wallet of the man he killed? And why would his wife start meddling with his snails so that she can find it? Why would she think it was weird that he wasn't there, in order for her to start poking at his stuff? He even told her he was going to get her scarf from the river.

Speaking of which, why the hell was Letts' character there looking for it? And since Affleck was acting suspiciously and he basically believed he really was a killer why would he yell at him to make himself seen instead of watching him in secret to find out what he does there? And who threatens someone who's trying to murder them? Or who texts on his phone while trying to get away from a murderer by speeding in a rutty mountain road?
It's like the movie wanted to take you from point A to point B without ever bothering to think as to how to get there.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure it went to Hulu because it was a Fox/Disney movie

There’s a major plot event halfway through the movie that falls out of the movie. :funny: Also the movie was not ‘thrilling’ really until way towards the end. I’ll give it credit for maybe 2 or 3 lines that made me laugh (card game, autocorrect) that were intentional. I laughed and eyerolled at a lot of other stuff which I don’t think was meant to be funny.

And as for the snails, not only were they part of the source material, Max Anton, the films snail wrangler told Entertainment Weekly,
Patricia Highsmith, the author of the1957 novel kept snails in her hand bag.
Also, Anton said that after reading the novel and the films screenplay, he concluded that the snails were arguably, "The least slimy characters in the story".

This movie was actually pretty hilarious. I laughed at a lot of different things throughout, particularly with Affleck's character :funny:

I was actually enjoying this for the first hour or so, but my god did this movie get really dumb quick and that ending wasn't satisfying in the least and makes the whole thing just feel pointless IMO.

I thought Ben Affleck and Ana De Armas were good though and I can't say I was ever bored, but I got way more entertainment out of the supporting cast in this, especially the adorable daughter and Lil Rel Howery.

This was a huge waste of talent overall though, but I do hope to see Jacob Elordi get better roles in the future because if you've seen Euphoria, you know just how talented that guy is.

I don't even get why their friends liked them and wanted to be around them. They seemed like a pretty miserable couple. His two male buddies say they love him, and I don't get it. It's not like they were really getting along or had nice camaraderie. One of their lady friends seemed to want to boink Affleck. The writer's wife the same, so I guess there's that. But they didn't go anywhere with either of those subplots.
