Best Buy cutting 2,000 managers

I'm going to contribute to their demise by ordering $150.00 worth of merchandise from Amazon.

I buy most of my electronics from best buy, TV's, discount fridges and ovens, and PC's. I get that crazy 5% cash back and then use that when there is a good sale.

Whenever HDMI 2.0 becomes native on most 4K TV's, i'll most likely buy my 4K TV from there too.

Is this the beginning of the end for Best Buy? Will it go the way of Nobody Beats the Wiz?

...and Circuit City, the Good Guys, and other electronic and computer retail stores that have gone bankrupt. Best Buy will eventually be replaced by Amazon, sadly.

I just hope Fry's will not be axed in the future as well.

Electronic stores are becoming extinct.

I have been buying more electronics online. I bought my last flat screen online through Best Buy. I enjoy their rewards program. I usually get about $200 in cash back, which means I can buy movies or whatever. With my last cash back certificate I bought a new printer. I don't go to the store much because the selection is not what it used to be. It's better to go online at this point.

This makes me nervous. Every time another store shows signs of being in trouble, I get just a bit nervous that in the not-so-distant future, Walmart will be the only store left.

I sure hope not. I know shopping online is more convenient, but I like actually going to the store and getting what I want right then and there without waiting.

I thought the economy was improving?

This is about more than the current economy or Best Buy. It seems that specialty stores are facing difficulties competing with online shopping.

I like Best Buy. I recycle my old electronics there.
Me too. Old game consoles, computer monitors, televisions, etc. Better they take it in to be recycled than just dumped on the end of the street for garbage pick up.

4K is such a gimmick. Please don't waste your money.

4k isn't practical for most people anyways. The distance required to see a difference is larger than most people's living rooms.

You would need a theater setting in your home. Any regular size TV (80 inch or smaller) would not take advantage of a resolution higher than 1080p.

The amount of difference you would see between 1080 and 4k would be so small but cost you at least 2 grand more.

It's like anything over a 120 refresh rate. Your eye actually doesn't pick up anything over 120 I believe. So when you see TVs with 240 and beyond refresh rates its all a giant gimmick to get your money.

I think anything over 60" will do fine for 4K. There isn't much content yet, but James Cameron is filming his sequels to Avatar in 4K and movie theaters will also adopt 4K around the same time.

When Avatar 2 comes out on 4K for home release, I will adopt.

Best buy is for window shopping only... Then go online and buy the same item for way cheaper with free shipping.

Rumor is my local store losing a handful of managers...

At least it's management for a change and not the even lowlier employees.

Wow, we are so going to the digital age of shopping.

Nobody likes to go to stores physically anymore. I'd rather buy stuff in person, then wait for **** online. Stuff isn't so "express" in Canada just yet.

I went in this afternoon to recycle an old television. While I was waiting in line I watched their video with the different rates charged for computer maintanence and GeekSquad is outrageously expensive.

I went into a Best Buy a couple weeks back for the first time in years because I got a gift card for Christmas. The selection of their games and movies were awful and overpriced. Apparently they sell used games now and man, oh ,man are they expensive. They make Gamestop look like a bargain.

Not a single soul is there to help you. After looking for something that even remotely interested me I found one copy of Tomb Raider on the PS3 for $30 bucks. The next day I was in a Target and they had it for $14.

From what I've seen their "Geek" Squad knows merely the bare necessities about computers and charges you insane prices to make trivial repairs. I remember them telling me they charged upwards of $300 to replace a laptop fan.

I feel bad for good people losing their jobs...but as for Best Buy...

Good riddance.

You figure BestBuy would look at what happened to Circuit City and realize "you know...we need to overhaul our image and business model"

Well, they did to back to selling refrigerators, washers, and dryers, lol.

I had a feeling it was. Thanks for that.

Any of the Geek Squad places are terribly over priced. Most times they have a half dozen people who know the basics and one guy who can do it all. I knew a guy who went to one once as his system was broken, he said it wouldn't turn on. They had it for a week, sent it back and told him it's unfixable and charged him over $300. I know some tech geeks and got them to look at it. They had it fixed in about three days and charged him $150 + parts. It was something simple that was quickly noticeable. He got the info from them and took his bill back to GS to complain and they told him to **** off when he got to the manager. Not sure what happened after as I haven't seen him in a while. I should call and find out.

I am the "techie" almost everyone I know comes to when they have a computer problem so I'm a little more knowledgeable about how to handle and repair computers than the average person (although I do know people more knowledgable than me, they're also harder to contact, convienently :p). Some of the things they wanted to charge people for I'd do for half the price and a fraction of the time.

Maybe I should open my own handy-man computer fix-it operation.

How Best Buy has not been taken to court for false advertising, I'll never know. They have some of the worst deals.
