Best Film of Year - 21st Cent. Poll (discussion)

What's wrong with this thread for coming up with choices for the polls?

im just saying its a mess from the start, everyone was complaining about what movie should be in a poll
just make a Other option and be done with it

There is an OTHER option. And it's been used about 3 times since I started putting together polls, once by a person that missed the film they wanted to vote for on the poll.

Besides, the complaints have died down to almost nothing in the polls since I took over and actually began soliciting feedback before they go up. They haven't been perfect, hey I'm human, but a little bit of work and a reasonable attitude go a long ways.

The 2007 poll looks good, except Superman Returns came out in 2006.

Right you are. Easy fix to make to. Any suggestions for a replacement? I'm thinking Taxi to the Dark Side, I like to stick at least on significant documentary in each poll, but I'm certainly not glued to that.

Thoughts:

1. I think 2007, top to bottom, is the strongest year to date.

2. La Vie en Rose, The Savages, Away From Her, and In the Valley of Elah are low profile enough and don't seem to fit the demographics of this board that I'd be open to replacing them if there's a call for it. Any recommended alternatives?

^ at the time it didn't seem that there were that many good movies, but in retrospect it was actually a very good year

I would actually leave in at least La Vie en Rose. It's hands down one of my contenders for best movie of the year for sure.

So, what needs to go? What needs to be bumped up? What have I completely forgotten?

I think most of the 'other notables' were more popular than Religulous. I'd probably replace it with Appaloosa, which seems to have a pretty good following.

Although I think we all know what's going to win.

Yeah, damn Abba and their infectious pop hooks!

Yeah, I'm not all that attached to Religulous. And I'd agree that Appaloosa has a decent following. Speed Racer too, although I think you'll get more general agreement about the former.

damn 08 was a solid year, though i agree that the two best movies of the decade came out in 07 i much prefered 08 overall

I disagree. I was very dissapointed in 2008. One of the weakest years of the decade.

Well to be fair, half of the great movies havent been released yet. But no this doesnt look like a great year either. Im not gonna judge it until Ive seen the movies.

say what you want about 07 but 08 was my favorite year of movies. i don't know how it can be considered "the weakest of the decade" there were some very solid films, and a great many more that were just plain entertaining. on all fronts and for every demographic there seemed to be something of worth (i try to ignore the very existance of twilight)
this is a very solid list

So, what needs to be bumped up? And, conversely, bumped out?

Just looking things over, 2009 is a lot better than I expected. Especially following the writer's strike. There's certainly plenty of good films, although I'd say what sets it behind other years is a lack of standout great films.

I'm not sure what I'd replace it with, but Sherlock Holmes might have enough of a chance at getting some votes to warrant being put on the poll.

Yeah, Holmes is something that I thought long and hard about.

I'd guess that Public Enemies, Adventureland, or World's Greatest Dad are the bubble movies. Or, perhaps, Bright Star since it really doesn't fit the demographics of the board. Thoughts?

I decided to bump Adventureland in favor of Holmes. But, if someone really wants to vote for Adventureland, I'll bump something else.
