I think the Marvel Essential line (and the DC Showcase equivalent) is a blessing for people who want to get into characters and can't afford or waste time hunting down individual issues. Some purists spite bile at them for being in B&W but to me that is a very small issue considering the amount of content you are getting.
I've heard people say that they've had some volumes fall apart on them but I have yet to have that issue, thank goodness.
I've read The Amazing Spider-Man volumes up to 8, 3 volumes of Tomb of Dracula, both volumes of Silver Surfer, one Iron Man, and 3 X-Men (the Claremont run), Volumes 4-6 of The Avengers and vol. 6 of the Incredible Hulk.
I was wondering if there are some hidden gems to seek out outside of the main titles? What do you guys think?
