My Newest Comic Hobby!

I like the way the bound volumes look on a shelf better than the tpb's so that's why I'm doing it.

And I actually liked Universe X (though yes, it's Earth X was way better). Paradise X was a stretch though, that's true.

I'm lovin' the idea JH! I'm determined to get a few volumes bound by years end. For my first batch I'm thinking...

Spider-Girl: Issues 0-100, plus the Buzz and Darkdevil minis. Thinking of adding Last Hero/Planet Standing as well.

Untold Tales of Spider-Man: I think this was a 25 issue run, so with annuals this should make a nice 2 volume set.

Slingers: Issues 0-12, plus the Identity Crisis storyline that led into it.

Green Goblin: 13 issues, which seems small for a volume. Can't really think of what else to add except the good Goblins first appearance in Spectacular Spider-Man.

Spider-Man 2099: I was originally thinking of making this pure S-Man, with his main series, 2099 Unlimited and Spider-Man meets Spider-Man 2099. But I've been wanting to get Ghost Rider and Doom 2099, so this will probably turn into Marvel 2099.

Honestly, I think this could make for 1 volume if you don't mind the thickness. I usually aim my volumes around 30 issues each.

You could include Web of Spider-Man 125 and Spectacular Spider-Man 225, which introduced him. Also, there was an issue he tied-in with when the Spidey comics became Scarlet Spider. That could help. And lastly, a loose tie-in is the Spider-Man: Legacy of Evil oneshot. Phil's barely in it but it details Ben Urich's research of all things Green Goblin. He writes a story about it and in the end he gives it to his nephew, Phil to read. Phil, of course, went on to become the Green Goblin after that.

You could also throw in the first arc of the Runaways' second volume with Phil in it (though he doesn't become the Goblin) and the Loners mini that also had him in it. Just some thoughts.

Yeah, I had the same problem. I just wanted an X-Men volume but then remmebered how much I liked the other titles up to Fall of the Hammer... then how I liked the President Doom story. Then I just decided to do a 2099 run chronologically.

Well, I just got in 5 volumes of X-Men and 1 volume of Green Lantern but I'm apparently lacking the attachment to my phone to get the pictures onto my computer, so I'll post them later when I find my wife's camera.

i think i could do this! i have an entire carboard box, (the BIG ones), and maybe i could put something together!

Until I can find a solution to manual foil stamping, much of my bookmaking projects are on hold.

any mini series suggested to pick up? my first volume will be "marvel tales". it will feature some of the marvel tales comics, some of the amazing spiderman collectible series, ult. spidey annual 3, fantasic four 373, siver surfer 111, slingers 1, and a mini series...

I was actually thinking about Marvel Tales a few days ago. I've always liked the idea of binding a Hobgoblin volume from the Kingsley/Leeds days, then maybe a second one with Macendale through his death and the reveal that Kingsley was the original Hobgoblin. He's always been one of my favorite villains, especially his first few storylines.

His first appearance is pricey though, but my first experience with him was in the Marvel Tales reprints of that story so those are still dear to my heart, so I might use those to get the story.

As for a mini series... some suggestions...

Deadly Foes of Spider-Man 1-4 (Focus on some of Spidey's villains such as Shocker, Beetle, Speed Demon, and Rhino)

Venom: Lethal Protector 1-6 (Venom story but Spidey's also a big character all throughout it)

Spider-Man: The Mutant Agenda 1-3 (skip issue 0) (Spider-Man and Beast vs Hobgoblin and an anti-mutant human guy)

j m demattis lost years and redemption would work as one volume

They would. I prefer bigger volumes but I know a lot of people who bind like thinner 12-18 issue volumes. That would work well for that.

In addition, you could also add the backup feature of the Power And Responsibiliy arc that kicked off the clone saga and detailed Ben Reilly's creation, his battling Peter, and his waking up in the smoke stack. That'd all be about an issue or more in length. Then Lost years 0-4, then Redemption.

Hmm... Now I'm debating it. I have all that bound in my Clone Saga binds but they're all separated as needed. I like the idea of them all together as an origin of Ben Reilly.

Maybe to thicken it up I could then include Power & Responsibility, bringing him back into the Spider-Man world, and then the Exile Returns when he adopts a costume. 'Origin of the Scarlet Spider'.

I'll have to seriously consider this.

What is manual foil stamping?

It's when you're using things like this:

To stamp metallic colored letters/designs on to the surface. You heat the letters/designs, place a special metallic foil between it and the target area, and stamp down quickly. Today, most machines can only do it on an unbound book cover, which is a problem for me.

I heard j m demattis is actually writing some back up stories for spectacular spiderman that are set during bens years on the road - might be worth waiting for those then maybe binding one with creation of ben - the lost years - new stories - redemption - (optional: revelations) - one shot of kaine in prison by jmd from spectacular - then that recent arc featuring kaine from amazing which also features ben on the road

Well I'm excited. I've been planning another outing of binding comics and it's a biggie. I have most of the cut and ready to go. I"m just waiting on a couple comics I bought off of Ebay to come in and then I'm shipping them off.

A grand total of 31 volumes!!!! Add that to my already 19 and that's 50 baby!

I'll be continuing my X-Men binds by another 8 volumes (total taking it from the 90's relaunch through Operation Zero Tolerance, containing all X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, and any notable tie-ins and such).

I'm binding another Spider-Man volume during the Clone Saga.

There's an 11 volume Avengers bind starting at Disassembled (slightly before) going through Secret Invasion, including all major titles such as New Avengers, Mighty Avengers, Thunderbolts, Secret War, and tie-in and crossover issues.

Hmmm, what else....

There's a bind for the original Sentry mini by Jenkins.

Midnight Nation by Straczynski done in black/brown imitation leather.

A volume called Tales of the Marvels including Marvels, Marvels: Eye of the Camera, and Ruins, done in red immitation leather.

A 2 volume Immortal Iron Fist including the whole series, the Immortal Weapons mini, and all the oneshots that came out of the series in green imitation leather.

A 2 volume Daredevil volume covering the Bendis run in Dark Red imitation leather.

Hmm, a couple others I'm forgetting off hand.

I'm excited to send all of these out. Here in a couple months when I get them back, I'll be sure to post pictures.

I could never do what you do, JH, but I have to admit that I'm jealous of your volumes.

It was hard for me to do it initially, but once after I had to sell my entire collection I lost the collector's mentality. For me, it then just became about stories. Once I no longer cared what the issues were worth, only my reading them, the decision was easy. I sent away 3 volumes of Spider-Man (90's chronological mix of Spider-Man, Amazing, Spectacular, and Web) and when I actually got the chance to hold them in my hand, I was in love.

Now, I buy with binding in mind. If it something I can't bind, I seldom pick it up. If there's something that comes out that I would like to bind in two separate volumes (such as some recent Green Lantern issues for both Blackest Night and Spectre volumes) then I buy two issues in preparation. It's a lot of fun.

I have a friend who got into comics after watching Iron Man and after seeing my volumes he's doing the same thing. He's done nothing for the past 3 or 4 weeks but talk about the order that Batman's come out since Hush to now and how he wants to change things around for his preferable Binding project... reading through them to see if everything fits character and villain-wise, etc. It's a trip, and the payoff is totally worth it!

Maybe I'll look into it sometime. I remember I used to be able to find cheap comics at Half-Price Books. I bet there lots of other places that sell slightly damaged comics for cheap. And for all intents and purposes, what's the difference between binding Marvel Tales and original Amazing (other than the little blurb that says..."Originally presented in...")?

I plan on doing an original Hobgoblin bind using Marvel Tales for the first 9 or 10 appearances. No time soon, but eventually. You should be able to include all of his earlier stuff through the death of Ned Leeds, the first appearance of Rose, and the Jack O Lantern stuff all in one volume with no problem. That's the complete arc for that time period unless you want to jump ahead to Hobgoblin lives to show that it was really Kingsley all along, though I never liked that reveal.

That was actually my first project when I had all the original issues. But then I had to sell them and don't want to spend the money to replace them only to cut them up. So Marvel Tales will be an eventual buy.

A small note on foil stamping:

That image I posted refers to a very old technique of foil stamping letters. Today's manual foil stampers are actually more sophisticated. They're more like the automatic stamping machines. Unfortunately, like those machines, they don't have the ability to stamp book covers that have already been bound. As with printing, it's usually approached by stamping the materials before binding them.

Those bound books look very nice on a shelf, but they look like encyclopedias (which can be boring if you have shelves and shelves of them).

Besides that, I don't think I could have my comics cut and bound like that.
I don't have a large collection but I wouldn't want to lose the value they do have.

I do mine because I like the uniform look. Other people do spice them up some by having the spine stamped to look like the title on the covers, or mixing up the spine design. A lot are starting to design their own dustcovers and have those printed off, etc.

It's entirely however you want it. I personally like the encyclopedia look myself.

And for me, comics have no value. Their value are in the stories and the enjoyment I get out of them. I wouldn't cut up an expensive comic, but most comics aren't too expensive so it's no big deal. I don't plan on selling them, so I enjoy them more by reading them frequently off the shelf like this than thinking of what I'll eventually get out of them financially.

Well, last week I sent out my next and largest batch to date (30 Volumes) and yesterday they confirmed their arrival. I was getting nervous because as of last Thursday only 3 of the 4 boxes showed up and one was damaged, but the last showed up yesterday so we're good.

I was told by them that they estimate my order to be completed around 3 weeks from now so I'm uber excited.
