Of all that has gone in comic book publishing history, DC or Marvel, Vertigo or 2000AD for example, who present you with your best reading experience - what are your choices for best reads ever ?

My top 5;

1. Kingdom Come *
2. Batman: The Killing Joke *
3. The Batman Adventures: Mad Love
4. Superman: Red Son
5. Justice League: Throne of Atlantis **

* Kingdom Come
and The Killing Joke are pretty much interchangeable at 1 and 2. I'm tempted to say KC just edges it because of its scope - but then I could just as easily say TKJ edges it because of its simplicity.

** I'm not a huge fan of Geoff Johns but boy did he get it right with Throne of Atlantis.

Great list Milk Tray. But I would expect nothing less from you. I too love Throne of Atlantis and the ending left me beyond sympathetic toward Orm. I really felt for the guy.

I’m sure my list is probably controversial or maybe just weird in places, but here goes:

1. Kingdom Come - for me, THE definitive graphic novel.
2. Superman, Up Up & Away - I hadn’t read this until the last few weeks but I did after hearing guys on these forums gushing over it. It has vaulted over All Star and Birthright for my favorite Supes story.
3. Battle for the Cowl - a guilty pleasure for sure. I love this story. Nightwing is a boss. He’s more than a boss in this story. He’s the boss of all bosses
4. Forever Evil - I’m a sucker for this story. But it has to be read in conjunction with the tie in involving The Rogues
5. Knightfall - it lags with Azbats but it is just so epic and takes its time. I like to read Batman Prodigal as an epilogue.

Honorable mention: it is so close but I almost included No Mans Land. I absolutely adore that entire run. Words can’t describe how much I love many of the individual stories, most notably the ones involving Helena, Scarecrow, Ivy and Cassandra. I think the lack of a consistent artist threw me off. If you ever want a succinct showcase of human nature and to see the difference in how Superman and Batman perceive the world, check out when Supes shows up (briefly) in the story. I almost put it above Knightfall

I would also add Throne of Atlantis to my honorable mention. I love Aquaman. Absolutely love the character and he is on full display here. I think my only drawback is how this story seems to be the only story that writers can come up for the character. It has been repackaged over and over in other stories. But this is the best iteration.

All Star Superman by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely
Astonishing X-Men by Joss Whedon and John Cassaday
Avengers Forever by Kurt Busiek, Roger Stern, Carlos Pacheco and Jesus Marino
Batman by Tom King
Daredevil by Mark Waid and Chris Samnee
Fantastic Four, New Avengers, Infinity, Avengers & Secret Wars by Jonathan Hickman
Hawkeye by Matt Fraction and David Aja
JLA by Grant Morrison
Kingdom Come by Mark Waid and Alex Ross
Miracle/Marvel Man by Alan Moore
Saga by Brian K Vaughn and Fiona Staples
The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller
The Sandman by Neil Gaiman
The Vision by Tom King and Michael Walsh
Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons

I was also going to mention Superman-Peace on Earth. If you haven’t read that, I strongly recommend it. Very simple Alex Ross story which gets more to the heart of human nature than it does anything dealing with Superman

Kingdom Come
XMen God Loves man Kills
Marvels
Wonder Woman Hiketeia
Watchmen

I reread Prodigal not too long ago  Apparently it's out of print now as a trade so I'm glad I picked it up (waay back) when I did.

Fair point

Nice to see Hiketeia mentioned. Have you read Justice League: A League of One? That's essentially a Wonder Woman story - I recommend it if you haven't read it.

I think above all for me, are Kingdom Come & Watchmen.

Kingdom Come will always hold a special place for me, got me back into comics full time after nearly a decade of being off them. Most of the books I like most these days are:
Mouse Guard
Wallace Wood's Cannon
Will Eisner's The Contract With God (or probably anything else slice of life by him)
Howard Mackies Ghost Rider (particularly Rise of the Midnight Sons and Hearts of Darkness)
Daniel Way's Ghost Rider
Batman And The Outsiders
Captain Britain And The MI13
Annihilation/Nova/Annihilation: Conquest/Guardians of the Galaxy
The Immortal Iron Fist
Chuck Houston & Co.'s Moon Knight
Usagi Yojimbo
The Death of Superman (first collected edition I ever picked up)
Death's Head/ DHII/MarvelUK
Incredible Hercules
Damn near anything by Jeffrey Brown
