The only ones I haven't seen.

I don't know anything about being a pro film critic, and Best Picture winners aren't always the best measure, but you're missing some great old ones (The Apartment, The Great Ziegfeld, etc.)

It's amazing how few of these I like let alone love. The last 4 years (besides Slumdog) have been great for my personal choices, but really, beyond 1990, there's only Midnight Cowboy, All About Eve and Amadeus that are any where near my top movies list.

1940s- Casablanca
1950s- All About Eve
1960s- Midnight Cowboy
1970s- Kramer vs Kramer
1980s- Amadeus
1990s- The Silence of the Lambs
2000s- No Country For Old Men

I can understand a preference for Malick's film to Saving Private Ryan, but SPR is such an important work. It changed the entire war film--of any type. Black Hawk Down, TROY!!, the new Robin Hood...they all ape what Speilberg did. It was so culturally iconic that it led to an even greater miniseries (Band of Brothers) which has led to another. It is the cultural image of WWII. And the first half hour on the beaches of Normandy and the last half hour with the "skirmish" over the bridge are probably the most harrowing war scenes, I've ever seen in a movie.
See, that's the #1 thing I don't like about the movie, as I don't feel that any of that influence it's had on future war movies was positive. I hate how he manipulated the imagery (shutter speed, general cinematography, etc) to look even more chaotic, bleak and harrowing, as if the actual scenes and situations weren't horrific enough as they were. I just don't like that approach to war/battle films at all (I like Ridley Scott's work and Band of Brothers in spite of it), and found the contrast of the naturalistic beauty with the horrors of war that Malick used in TTRL to be much more powerful. So basically, I realize that SPR is the cultural image of WWII - I just don't like that it is.

I like oscar movies and unlike the acting categories, there are very few wins that I have a problem with. Even in years when seriously great films like Raging Bull or Goodfellas are snubbed, I like the movies that won.

I didn't really like The Hurt Locker.... UP or District 9 should have won....
