Most decades had a distinct sound in music. Has it stopped changing since 2000's?

Elvis of the 1950's. Beatles in the 1960's. Many bands of the 1970's, had a pretty distinct sound for that era. The same could be said of different genres in the 1980's and 1990's. The music fit within those decades. I don't feel much of a change through 2000-2015. Anyone else feel this way? :shr:

I don't know about that. I thinks it's more to do with the fact that the better artists tend to hang around longer.

Yeah. Plus, because of the internet people listen to such a huge variety of music that there is not a singular genre that's popular.

Early 2000's felt like a mélange of mainstream rap and whatever kind of rock you'd call bands like HIM, CKY, and any other promoted by CCS.

I don't know about most other genres from these decades but I'd say hip hop sound still changes. The hip hop sounds of 90s, early 2000s, and now have distinct sounds. R&B has mostly stayed the same. I don't know about rock from these eras most of the rock I listen to is from 80s, early 90s.
I dont listen to country but there was this funny video that was able to mashup all the popular country songs from the last couple of years and they synced damn near perfectly

Are there really any big "rock" bands this era? I guess pop rock/alternative rock bands like Maroon 5 and Coldplay are the only ones I see on the charts.

It is also important to note that what we generally perceive as "the sound of an era" often is determined in hindsight, well after that decade has ended. Perhaps we are not far enough removed from the aughts, and we are still in the middle of the 10s, so we are not in a position to determine what the "sound" is.

Music of the last 15 has had distinctive sounds but due to the rise of the internet there is a lot more variety as people have access to many different types of music.

Nu-Metal, Crunk, Dubstep, Emo, Indie Rock, Witch House, ect.

Mainstream Hip Hop has a very distinct sound right now.

I hear rock bands struggle in the U.S as they don't get much mainstream musical airplay but I would say bands like Foo Fighters, Queens Of The Stone Age, The Arctic Monkeys, Muse, Biffy Cyro, Kings Of Leon and Radiohead are mainstream rock bands that seem to be doing well globally.

Royal Blood recently had a successful début album last year.

The reason why we don't have a clear cut distinct sound of the 00s is because of the rise of variety.
