No surprises from me, I'm going with Frozen.

I like animated movies in general, but nowhere near how much I like Frozen. No animated movie has ever topped even my list of yearly favorites, until Frozen.

Before Frozen came out I might have put down Black Swan or Inglourious Basterds.

Here's my list of the movies I've enjoyed the most in the last five years.

How to Train Your a Dragon
Kung Fu Panda 2
Tangled
Skyfall
Mission Impossible 4
Thor
War Horse
Lincoln
Moon
The Kings Speech
Star Trek 2009
District 9
Up
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
X-Men First Class

Man of Steel
The Artist
Tron Legacy

This is a tough one, but I'll go with Django Unchained.

Inglorious Basterd's, Inception, and Wolf of Wall Street were my other choices.

This is a tough question for me.. My list in no particular order

1. 12 years a slave

2. Gravity

3. Wolf of Wall Street

4. Blue Valentine

5. Avengers

6. Dark Knight

7. Django unchained

8. Social network

9. Avatar ( mostly for the special effects)

10. Drive

11. Inception

And many more comedy, super hero movies I am forgetting to mention.

The Avengers.

You heard me, snobs. :o
Ooh love Avengers. A magnificent entertainment. The best movie of its kind since The Incredibles. A dazzling, joyous and uproarious film. A film to watch with a full crowd.

The Avengers

I'm with you. I used to try to be more snobbish about movies (I feel like everyone goes through that, especially when they get to college), but now I'm just like "which movie did I enjoy watching the most?" Whichever movie answers that question is the best movie for me.

Avengers it is.

Toy Story 3 is another one that is way up there.

Yep I'm the same way. If the movie has me continuously coming back for more and loving every bit of it, like I do with the Avengers, then its a great movie to me. Like you, I'm the same way about Toy Story 3 also. Heck most of Pixar in general

If I did honorable mentions, Toy Story 3 would be one of them.

As a person with writerly aspirations (I know! :woot:), Toy Story 3 to me is one of the towering writing achievements of the recent past. A flawlessly constructed, brilliantly wrought piece of story-telling that is also one of the most sobering, gracious and devastating American films in recent memory. A story of toys achieves a feeling of such forlorn melancholy, of the untenable passage of time and of the platonic ideal of love and devotion that you would previously think was only possible in high brow foreign language dramas.

It is a priceless film. And all the more wonderful for being so widely embraced - it won both, the domestic as well as the international box office crown in 2010, the best film to win either this new century.

Here's my Top 10 list with 2 films per year over the past 5 years, it was a bit tough making these selections, but I'm happy with these picks, check 'em out if you haven't already:

+12 Years a Slave
+The Wolf of Wall Street
+Goon
+The Raid: Redemption
+Warrior
+Take Shelter = This is my pick for the best single movie of the last 5 years.
+Fish Tank
+127 Hours
+Up
+Where the Wild Things Are

Here are some honourable mentions as well: Brothers, Fantastic Mr. Fox, District 9, Inception, Leaves of Grass, [*REC] 2, Shame, Drive, Attack the Block, The Dark Knight Rises, Wreck-It Ralph, Men in Black 3, Man of Steel, The World's End and 42.

Is this a real post? Everyone who doesn't like populist tripe like The Avengers is just going through some phase?

[BLACKOUT]For the record I really liked Avengers. That really is some shameful **** though, accusing everyone who likes non-mainstream movies of going through a phase.[/BLACKOUT]

Some of you can't read. The OP said pick 1!! And yet I'm seeing lists! Jeeez. I'm going with the Raid 2....for now.

I like how if you don't pick something like The Avengers you're automatically a snob. Some people may actually genuinely enjoy 'snobby' films. I enjoyed Joaquin talking about crabs and ****ing sand women more than The Avengers. It was funny. Also, it's hard to call The Master a snobby film when it has fart jokes.

Yeah, I'd like to see the lists off this page. It's nice to see people actually buckle down and pick ONE movie. It's easy to make a list of your favorite movies so it means more when you can narrow it down to one.

If you don't grow out of it, it's not a phase. Duh.

Some of you can't read. The OP said pick 1!! And yet I'm seeing lists! Jeeez.

But the OP is slumcat.

I will tie up The Avengers &
Sharknado
because I can

Avenger is *very* good for what it's trying to be, but what it's trying to be is a depth-less popcorn flick. I fully expect Avengers 2 to be a much better movie, given Whedon's track record.

We all value different things. If you like being challenged intellectually and/or seeing beautiful cinematography and hearing riveting musical scores, TA won't engage you as much as someone who predominantly likes one-liners, Shakespeare references, and happy endings.

Damn. I didn't realize people were going to get so worked up about it. I wasn't trying to put down anyone in this thread.

Mud is very evocative of Mark Twain. A quintessential American film in my book.
