I don't know if it would hold up today, but the best tv ad I ever saw was one for Carling Black label lager back in the 80s. I was only a kid when I saw it, and I only saw it once or twice, when I was visiting my brother in London, it didn't play on Scottish tv.
So what happened was some guy was getting chased by a gang of guys who wanted to steal his beer from him(they may have been medieval knights, not sure). I can't recall how the ad started, maybe with knights in medieval times or whatever, but when you thought the ad had finished, and another ad started up with a person standing in a supermarket queue doing the usual type of soap powder ad, suddenly the guy with the beer came barreling through the supermarket being chased by this gang.
This happened for about 4 adverts, you thought the ad was over, a new one had started, and then the guy would come barrelling through in the middle of it, once again being chased by the gang.
I think the soap powder one was about the third or fourth ad in succession, i recall that one because i remember thinking 'ok, now the beer ad has finished, we are onto a new ad for sure this time', and pissing myself laughing when the guy suddenly started running through the supermarket.
I can't get onto youtube to see if it was there, but of course, the effect of the ad(s) the first time you saw it on tv cannot be replicated, the very definition of 'you had to be there'. Very funny. natch
