BlackBerrys etc

I am new to the Blackberry smartphone world. Can anyone tell me how the data side works? Do emails only count toward your overall data count if you open them or send them? I keep getting alerts telling me that I have new messages but I don't click on them because I'm not sure how the data thing works yet.

do you have a data plan Marx? if so, which?

If the emails are already on your phone, from your e-mail provider (hotmail, gmail, etc) then they've already been counted out of your data plan.

You have to look at it this way:
Anything you do on the internet, sending / receiving emails, browsing, IM, any apps that connect to the net... are all using your data plan.

...but what I am saying is that I automatically get updates to my phone saying that I have a new message from yahoo but I never open them. You're saying they still count towards my data plan? I thought they only counted if I actually opened them...

I myself have a BB BOLD 9700.
Love it.
Use the Yellowpages App a LOT, along with Facebook and a TD Bank App that I have as well.

When you say updates to your phone, do you mean a new e-mail message alert?
Did you set up your yahoo email address on your Blackberry?

If so, then those alerts, ARE your emails coming through on your phone to view.
So in that case, since the information has already been transfered from your email inbox via the internet to your phone, that volume for that has come out of your data plan.

Yeah, I set up my yahoo on my phone. I guess I just misunderstood what that meant. I am so confused by this whole data thing Shah. :O

I used AT&T's data calculator and it says that 20 emails per day amounts to .01 GB. My plan is 200 MB, is that alot?

EDIT: I just looked closer at the 200 MB. I think I should be ok.

Yea, it's confusing, but a few more months and you'll get the hang of it.
1 GB = 1024 MB.
So 0.01 GB = 10 MB appoximately.

200 MB is not a LOT, but it's not **** either.
If you're doing text emails, browsr random sites, etc then just watch your usage, and you should be fine.
Anything beyond that: FB, emailing pictures, MMS, youtube, downloading songs, and anything media related will eat up that 200 MB super fast.

Just watch your usage first couple of months, and modify your plan or usage accordingly.

I really like the phone...it's just alot to figure out and get used to.

how much is an unlimited data plan? that's what I have

AT&T doesn't offer an unlimited plan. They highest (and most expensive) plan they have is a 2GB (with tethering) for $45 or a 2GB (without tethering) for $25.

AT&T used to have unlimited data plan, but awhile ago they stopped offering the plan except those customers who have the plan already, due to the fact that their network was overwhelmed by iPhone users and it made the whole system sluggish.

t-mobile has an unlimited plan for 19.99

Yikes...I bet so. It's still a little weird that other major carriers offer an 'unlimited' data plan and AT&T doesn't.

Wow...that's crazy. I think the data plan I have now will be ok. I guess I'll see when I get the first bill though. :O

BLACKBERRY 'PLAYBOOK' PREVIEW

Verizon will be switching to tiered data pricing in around 4 to 6 months. Rumor is Sprint will be as well although no timetable has been mentioned.

So blackberry fans, i recently read an article on Engadget saying that RIM plans on completely ditching the blackberry os we see in blackberry phones nowadays for the new tablet os featured in blackberries soon to be released playbook tablet, now of course it would be optimized for smartphones, but do you think this is smart on blackberries behalf? I myself have to admit that new tablet os acquired by qnx is absolutely gorgeous and this seems like a smart move but a gamble which i think RIM should do especially since RIM will have to step up future touchscreen phones, this os would really go well with any future touchscreen blackberry and make them competitive in terms of the smartphone touchscreen market. What do you guys think?

I think those tablets will be too big to be put in pockets and even purses, which would make it a bad idea. Who'd want to carry a phone that you will need a backpack to bring it around everywhere you go?

I think you got mistake, im talking about RIM putting the new os that was shown on the blackberry playbook onto future blackberry phones

i'd like to see how it works and what bugs if any it will have first

however if they need a tester, they can send me a free phone lol

I'm not sure what that is...but it doesn't sound good. I'm sorry Alex.

Can anyone tell me how Facebook for BlackBerry works? Is it like your email and you're signed in ALL the time? Or can you download it onto your phone, and sign into it whenever you want?
