Blockbuster Finally Kicks the Bucket

What about their online service? I use them since they allow movies and games on one account. I have Netflix account for instant streams.

I'm pretty sure the online service is done for too. I think the only thing that will have the Blockbuster name is channel packages on certain cable companies

I read this was only the physical stores, not the online component. All I can find relevant to it was this: "He added that Dish continues "to see value in the Blockbuster brand, and we expect to leverage that brand as we continue to expand our digital offerings." It's in no way a confirmation of them continuing it, at least in it's current incarnation though.

Nope.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2013/11/06/blockbuster-closing/3456271/

Dish plans to focus on its Blockbuster @Home business, a streaming service available to Dish pay-TV customers for an extra fee.

Blockbuster On Demand, its streaming service for the general public, also will continue to operate. "The quantity of movies (for Blockbuster On Demand) is so limited," Rayburn said. "Some of them are not even on (high-definition). It's not even a real service. You can't put it up there with Vudu or Netflix or Hulu."

Blockbuster is still around...but I think it goes bye bye. I think Hulu is next to go, since ABC and FOX keep putting it up for sale. Yet, no one wants to buy it cause ABC and FOX will take their library off the site, thus reducing it's true value.

It said that all stores will be closed by early January and the mail service will end by mid December.

They should try to throw in a five year deal for selling Hulu. They keep the library updated and fully accessible for the first five years then after it's just whatever happens. It wouldn't guarantee a sale but it would be far more interesting to a potential buyer.

good. its about time. blockbuster was a horrible excuse for a video store.

There was a Suncoast video store by me that I liked, that and 48hr video that's still around.

I thought is was funny when they tried to compete directly with Netflix.

You could just smell the desperation.

You didn't need to be a stock analyst to see that ending in failure.

Most people used netflix because they hated blockbusters late fees and crappy selection.

Goodbye, you sluggish dinosaur.

I thought they already shut down a while ago?

The closest one near me closed about three years ago and I haven't seen any Blockbusters around in that time.

As I said in my status when I posted this on Facebook a few days ago, Blockbuster is less like a piece of my childhood dying and more like the death an old childhood friend you haven't seen or spoken to in over a decade. I'll always remember riding my bike between the two Blockbusters in my area trying to find a new release.

Good riddance.

I remember I walked with my cousins for 3 miles to get to the Blockbuster in California to rent a Nintendo 64 from them and they wanted a $125 deposit which we didn't have. So we had to walk back 3 miles, get a check from my dad, and then walk back only for them to say that they didn't have any in stock.

I never went into a Blockbuster, but my small north Georgia town had about 3 homegrown video stores. I miss those days.

Surprised at some of the harsh words for Blockbuster. The brand will always carry some nostalgia for me.

But think of all the calories you burned! Blockbuster was looking out for your health. You should have thanked them. :o

Yeah blame your dad for not driving you or not buying you a Nintendo 64, not Blockbuster. I loved the Blockbuster during my Gamecube days, that system had so many good games I could never keep up with it

Ya they just were behind the curve, every innovation the company had was only spawned after another company had done it first and better. But oh boy were they the kings back when I was a kid. I can remember going there almost every weekend for years

I figured this was coming, but I'm still shocked. BB was a huge corporation, they owned the home video market.

Their ridiculous prices were their downfall. I remember as a kid game rentals were $3.99 a piece. I would spend my allowences renting multiple games. Then it went up to $5, then $6, then $9, and if I remember correctly, I saw a sign above the cash registers saying $11.99! Screw that.

I remember when I was younger, 13, I think, renting Pokemon Snap, and going to a weird little kiosk in the store, and printing out stickers of the Pokemon I caught.

I used to buy Rugrats & Pokemon tapes there too..

mem-o-riesss..

Quite the legacy for Blockbuster; This is the End was the last movie rented from them. By a guy in Hawaii at 11pm.

Blockbuster pretty much destroyed the independent, "mom and pop" video rental places. So good riddance I guess? Enjoy burning in big business hell next to Borders? I don't know what else I'm supposed to say when a big business goes under.

Toodles? Goodbye and good riddance? Hasta la vista?

Its probably been at least ten years since I shopped regularly at a Blockbuster location. I wish this news came by surprise, but sadly it doesn't. :(

Oh Blockbuster, how will miss thee :csad:. So many memories............
