Is there any real difference between blu-ray versus special edition dvds? Like are they basically the with the same amount features or not?

It depends on the movie/TV show you are getting. Sometimes there is more sometimes there is less.

Look on the back of the boxes...?

Ive noticed that lately the Blu-Ray will be a lot cheaper than the SE dvds. First week of release Blu-Ray is like 19.99 whereas SE dvds will be like 23-25bucks.

Blu-ray is the lead sku in home video these days. Prices are not nearly as high as they were a few years ago. Plus studios are doing Combo Packs with certain Blu-ray releases. Where you get the Blu-ray disc plus the DVD and Digital Copy all in one.

Blu-ray's are still pricey at $29.99 at the Target and Best Buy's I've been to but I have noticed several Sony players dropped at under $200.

special edition dvds used to be awesome, until hollywood came up with the digital copy copout

they give a couple of short little featurettes or something these days and then the digital copy

where as before the advent of blu they came with hours of little bits of information.

it makes me quite sad

Seems like the DVDs with the most features these days are in the Criterion Collection.

With more recent release when they release the special edition/unrated and barebones versions of DVDs, the special edition will be the default blu-ray release (Watchmen, Tropic Thunder, Iron Man, the Hangover, the Dark Knight, Inglorious Basterds, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull).

When blu-ray first came out, early releases of catalog titles were the barebones version, but nowadays you have the studios releasing HD versions of their special editions/unrated versions (Batman Begins, Transformers, V for Vendetta, Halloween).

Despite Blu-ray players dropping in price I still don't see Blu-ray being more dominant if people are still into buying DVD's.

I don't think the average buyer cares for content which is why most just buy the barebones DVD at $14.99 versus Blu-ray's $29.99.
