We are thinking of upgrading to blu-ray and we are wandering which brand to get and what to for in buy a player? Also are ther and special edition version of movies for the blu-ray and if not what is the difference between SE DVDs and standard Blu-ray versions?

First of all, do you have an HDTV?

Bluray has had different profiles. 2.0 is the latest version. Here is a break down of the profiles:

Profile 1.0 is the original hardware requirement for Blu-ray players and essentially meets the bare minimum for playing back Blu-ray Discs.

Profile 1.1 brings the addition of picture-in-picture functionality, also known as BonusView. Typically, Blu-ray movies use this feature to enable a small window of video commentary, where a director or actor talks about a scene while it happens in the background.

Profile 2.0, also known as BD-Live, requires your player to access the internet for certain features like movie trailers, Internet chats, scheduled chats with the director, Internet games, downloadable featurettes, and downloadable quizzes.

The best player out there is still the PS3. It is basically future proof, because it gets FW updates regularly. It has all of the HD audio options and it is up to date with Profile 2.0. It just went down in price to $299.99. It is also one of the best DVD upscalers as well, in case you don't have an HDTV or don't want to rebuy some movies you already have on DVD.

Some Blu-Ray movies do have special features that DVD's do not thanks to Profile 1.1 and 2.0. Every movie is different and some do not utilize the profile options.
I use this site regularly. High-Def Digest HD DVD & Blu-ray News and Reviews in High Definition. The reviews are usually on the money and they let you know all the options the movie has over DVD.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Ok that is odd, You and anyone else i asked this even my close friends have suggested the PS3 for the player. What about any other players second to the PS3? We are thinking of getting 2 players, one for the livingroom and one for me in my room. The Ps3 might go into my room :).

Thanks for the info.

you cant go wrong with the PS3, its makes a great media room

Either my eyes are completely desensitized by HD, but Blu-Ray, for the most part, is completely underwhelming to me.

I have an HD satellite, 1080P LG LCD TV, PC, and now a Blu-ray HD player. Some DVD's I own upscaled to HD on my TV look almost as good as a Blu-Ray dvd.

One of the first things I bought when I got my Blu-Ray player was the Blu-ray Rocky Anthology (Rocky I-VI). I own all these movies on regular DVD (digitally remastered versions) and there wasn't much difference in quality.

Granted, Rocky I-V were made prior to the DVD revolution, and I guess it's impossible to polish grainy footage. As for newer Rocky VI, the black colors are more richer, but the crisp visuals are really NOT that much better.

The only differences I have noticed are in CG-animated movies, and nature documentaries like BBC's Planet Earth. The quality of both have no comparison in upscaled DVDs and can only truly be appreciated in high definition.

1. How big is your TV?

2. How far away from the TV are you sitting?

well animation (Cell or CGI) will look good on blu ray especially the Pixar films ;). anything that was filmed in the last few years on blu ray will look good, like transformers, star trek 2009 etc.

yep if you want prime examples, get TDK & Star Trek on bluray

yep. i have a PS3 and it hasnt let me down

Ok we will be getting a PS3 and was wandering which one to get, the 120 GB or 250 GB hard drive? Does it make any real difference between the two? Why get the higher HDD?

its just if you want a bigger HDD, you can change it out and get a higher HDD
so theres no real difference

if you want to know how to change your PS3 HDD look here

for those who have the slim, other than the way the fat or slim hard drive removal differences, both use the same backup/restore utility shown in the video above ;).

May I recommend you to the High Def thread in the Misc Movies forum. There are a lot of cool people there who are not only great at recommending things regarding blu-ray but also finding great deals and are a blast talking to.
