Freddie Mercury Biopic Announced
Posted Nov 9th 2006 10:30AM by Jeffrey M. Anderson
Filed under: Casting

Guitarist Brian May of the rock band Queen has announced that a biopic of lead singer Freddie Mercury is on the way, according to a report from BANG Media International. Mercury, who died of AIDS in 1991, was famous for his raging vocal prowess, able to roar through a metal tune as hard as Motorhead, or warble a high falsetto that could turn opera singers green with envy. It will be tough to fill Mercury's onscreen shoes, but according to May, several actors have already expressed interest. "There is a film in the pipeline and we're all involved in it. I'm not allowed to say much about it and casting isn't finalised but we've had some incredible offers to play Freddie. Really incredible," said May to the UK's Daily Express.

Who the hell could play Freddie?

Well, they've got Elijah Wood playing Iggy Pop in another biopic, so I shudder to think who they'll get to play Freddie Mercury. I know...let's get that Vigo Mortensen fellow. He's hot right now and the girls really seem to like him.

Now this is a biopic I actually want to see.

I am looking forward to it.

Always wanted to see movie about him and Queen

Elijah as Iggy:whatever:
You've got to be kidding me.:csad:

Hugh Jackman. He has a history musical theatre, so we know he can sing. He's charismatic, charming, and he's proving himself to be one hell of an actor.

it sounds cliche, but seriously, johnny depp....look at him in donnie brasco, add in the willy wonka teeth, and you got freddy mercury.

Sacha Baron Cohen

so what if he's borat and ali g ? In contrast to his characters, he is a soft-spoken, gentlemanly Cambridge man who considered pursuing a PhD before going into comedy.

^ i think he can pull it off

Freddie was 5' 9", Sacha is 6' 3".

Johnny Depp gets suggested for a different role he absolutely wouldn't be a great fit for every 2 seconds (I've seen Hugh Hefner, Ozzy Osborne, and Tommy Lee all say they want him to play them). This isn't one of those cases.

In the event the movie is about the final few years of his life, noone would be better. If it spans the time from the very beginning of his career, then someone a bit younger is probably the best fit.

Jackman's like 6'2", six inches taller than the real Mercury. Not a flame, just pointing out a fact.

Can he sing?

Depp is too old. Isn't he about 43? I mean, Freddy was 45 when he died. He does have the height in his corner. If it chronicles the last few years of his life, he'd be awesome. But I'd like to see one spanning from the start of his life to his final days.

Jackman is too tall, and despite his theater experience, he's too built and manly.

Cohen has the look, but the idea of Borat / Ali G as one of the greatest and most talented performers ever would come off as a bit rediculous. Then again, Mike Myers is playing Keith Moon.

I'd say get an unknown for Freddy.

Maybe the 5'10 and a half Ewan McGregor, then. Immense talent, and we know he's a singer and a showman.

I love Queen. I'd definitely see this. I'm for Depp as Mercury.

McGregor's actually 5'9 1/2, I think, and he's got the talent. I could see him. Now that I think about it, with a little weight loss and big hair, I can kind of see Jackman as Brian May.

This really sucks because a few weeks ago, someone was talking about this actor with which I'm not familiar.
The dude looked exactly, I mean exactly like Freddie.

I was gonna post: "Congress should pass a law stating that this dude has to play Freddie Mercury in a bio-pic of his life!"...as a joke.

But I didn't, and now I have no idea who the actor was, and not inkling one as to what the thread was about.

Cohen has the look and the energy this could be his ‘RAY’ not many folks have seen the real Cohen he’s practically an unknown if you look at Borat / Ali G etc they’re just characters that he’s into...hell even shows up for most of the interview as them, very rarely as Cohen. He’s our Andy Kaufman in a way even better than Andy… There’s no doubt in my mind he’s perfect for the role. The height aint a big issue look at tom cruise lol

The only reason he’s not respected and taken seriously is due to his association with the movies he’s done.. If he shifts over to serious movies he’ll be on power with bale in terms of molding himself into the characters. The more I see Freddie Mercury transformation, the more I feel Cohen’s the best guy to pull it off.

Respect

Cohen is too friggin' tall to play Freddy Mercury. Unless you put EVERYONE ELSE IN THE MOVIE on stilts, it won't work.
