Bohemian Rhapsody

Yeah, I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It made me pump the rock fist and cry multiple times. Rami is simply amazing as Freddie, and the other actors all do very well in their respective parts. Not a perfect movie but a very good one and I truly hope Rami gets an Oscar nod because he WAS Freddie Mercury.

Please, most of these things happened, not in the order they did in the movie, but most of them were real, just rearranged in time for narrative structure. If people want to pail on the fiction in historical work, they should watch the last seasons of Versailles and Masters of Sex - talk about massive creative liberties.

Yeah, nearly every biopic is historically inaccurate in some way. And they nearly have to be because in real life, things don't unfold in an entertaining narrative structure. For example, The Social Network is a great movie, even though a lot of it was fictionalized or didn't happen the way the movie portrayed it.

Nice to see the performances getting some love. Rami has been nominated for a Golden Globe and SAG for best performance and the cast were nominated for a best ensemble SAG award. I'm pretty sure Bradley Cooper will sweep, but they're well deserved nominations.

This is low key the BO performance of the year. Believe it or not but Bohemian Rhapsody is the highest grossing 20th Century Fox movie in the Int'l markets in 2018 beating DP2 and it's likely to finish with a final world-wide total that is closer to 700m than 650m. That's blockbuster territory.

That's a lot of coin for a little biopic that frankly didn't look good to me at all, despite really liking Malek as an actor. Wouldn't have called that.

That said, looks like Bryan Singer is undoubtedly going to make it through the "Me Too" movement unscathed. Money talks.

Rami did an incredible job as Freddie! He seemed to capture the flamboyant side, as well as the quiet side of him! He also nailed the mannerisms and especially, the voice!

He deserves it!

Still haven't managed to go see it :( will hopefully be able to do so before it moves out of cinemas.

Malek is about to become very wanted. As the Bond thread has shown.

Bohemian Rhapsody is already at 700m before the turn of the year with no signs of slowing down. It's having all timer, legendary BO runs in Japan, South Korea, Italy and several other countries where Queen isn't even all that well known (not a pop culture phenomenon).

It's right nao 20th Century Fox's 12th in terms of WW numbers (behind Avatar, TPM, Ice Age 3, Ice Age 4, ROTS, ID97, DP, ANH, DOFP, DP2 & DOTPOTA) but BR is definitely crashing into the top 10 and will very likely land at the 9th spot considering it made close to 18m with estimates this past weekend from all the offshore territories.

When all is said and done, BR will be Fox's 4th highest grossing movie in International markets (will surpass TPM and rank behind Avatar, Ice Age 3 & 4). That's just freaking insane.

I've heard that they're talking about doing a follow up movie with the same cast about the rest of the years of Freddie's life, since the first movie was such a big hit. We'll see what happens!

But then we could get his legendary recording of "The Show Must Go On," as well as his final songs "These Were the Days of Our Lives" and "Mother Love."

It would definitely have to be very different from this film, but Freddie's life post diagnosis was no less interesting, I'd be very interested to see a film that tells the rest of the story.

Rami picked up the Best Actor award at the 2019 AACTA International Awards and also Best Breakthrough Performance at the Palm Springs Film Festival Gala.

He's definitely gaining momentum and putting in the work. I don't think he'll catch up with Bradley Cooper who has a lot of hype, but I think he must now be locked in as an Oscar nominee.

I think he has his spot all but assured for the Best Actor category. It'll come at the expense of Ryan Gosling for First Man. That was the hurdle for Malek and FM flopping with the above the line categories has secured Malek's position among the nominees.

Edit: I just read that the winner of the Best Actor category at the AACTA International has won the last 3 Best Actor Oscars (Leo DiCaprio, Casey Affleck & Gary Oldman).

Apparently the academy like to "reward" past nominees who haven't won previously. So Bradley might win simply because he's "due". It's all politics unfortunately. I would love if Rami won over Bradley. I preferred his performance (I actually thought Sam Elliot outshone Bradley in ASIB)

Bradley had a lot of momentum after the release of ASIB but he has lost some of it in the last few weeks. I don't really pay close attention to the awards season but I think he's not sweeping the precursors like it seemed he'll do at one point.

Doesn't the Academy love to reward actors who play real life impersonations?? That could be Malek's narrative for a Best Actor push (Bale has him beat for that one this year tho).

But just like Gaga (for Best Actress), Malek's chances will be hurt by being a first timer. They'll both get nominated for their respective categories for sure but a win might be a bridge too far.
