It's up to you--yes, you--to select the greatest adaptation of all time. Our DVD editors locked themselves in a room and emerged days later with this list of 20 great movies based on great works of fiction. We're leaving the top pick up to you. Vote as often as you wish! We'll tally the results and reveal the winner here on April 2.

Select One
A Christmas Story
A Room with a View
Apocalypse Now
The Dead
The English Patient
Howard's End
The Hunt for Red October
L.A. Confidential
Little Women
Lord of the Rings Trilogy
The Maltese Falcon
Pride and Prejudice
The Princess Bride
Rebecca
Sense and Sensibility
The Shining
Silence of the Lambs
To Kill a Mockingbird
The Unbearable Lightness of Being
The World According to Garp

3-way Tie between Apocolypse Now, LA Confidential, and Maltese Falcon.

Some good choices ...

I would say ... Red October, Lambs and the Shining, but I'm sure King would not agree!

The Lord of the Rings for me.

These movies really captured Professor J.R.R's vision, I think. The actors that they got were I think perfect for the roles and did an amazing job. Peter Jackson knew what he was doing.

i think to be able to vote for any movie, you have to have at least read the book that the movie is based upon. of those, i've read princess bride. i'm voting the princess bride.

add fight club to that list, then i'll vote for it.

The only ones where I've read the book and seen the movie is the Lord of the Rings, and Silence of the Lambs.

I don't think it comes even close

LOTR by a landslide

This is too hard.........
I'm torn between L.A. Confidential, Silence of the Lambs, and Apocalypse Now.

^I think The Godfather was written as a screenplay by Mario Puzo and Francis Ford Coppola, not as a book.

wow

The Godfather is a novel by Mario Puzo. The screenplay for both Godfather 1 and 2 are based on that novel.

Lord of the Rings.

Oh shyit.
Hey, we've all had dumb ass posts.
Let's forget this one...

I don't understand, is it the greatest movie that happened to be adapted? or is it the most accurate adaptation? Or is it the movie that has done the most with the least?

Elaboration!

While Apocalypse Now is one of my all time favorite movies, Heart of Darkness is one of my all time favorite books and I personally feel that it needs/deserves a more faithful adaptation.

No One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Jaws or The Godfather? What a pathetic list.

From the list, I pick the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

The Shawshank Redemption should be on this list.

That's what I was wondering, either way I'm picking To Kill A Mocking Bird.
