Great idea for a thread, Corp! Love to hear everyone's experiences at their shop(s).
I ended up going to three shops, with my lcs being the last. (Last year, my lcs only allowed one comic PER FAMILY!) Anyway, I left my house about 8:30 AM to head to Tacoma, since a shop I like to visit there opened at 10:00 AM. It takes about an hour to drive there, and we got in line about 30 minutes early...and, there was already a line around the small strip mall. He gets mega business because of this event, and he does a great job, having 3 Stormtroopers and a Darth Vader on hand. Also there was Batman, Joker (Heath version) and Scarecrow. Also, he handed out stuff for free as you waited in line, which included 6 of the dollar comics that DC and Marvel are selling lately and the 70th Anniversary Magazine that came out last year.
I brought alone my mother and my daughter. (Son was doing a school clean-up the neighborhood program; so, I didn't have him this year.) That first shop allowed 5 comics per person...so, I missed out on some stuff I wanted.
Driving to get some lunch, we saw a sign for 50% off Scholastic Books, and my daughter got a ton of books that are available for order in the schools. (If you have kids, you know the forms I'm talking about.) Oh, and my daughter bought a Hong Kong Fooey action toy at that previous comic shop.
We ate at Ruby Tuesdays, and I thought, "Hmmm...wonder if there is another comic shop in the area." Using my phone, I located one about 5 miles away...and, that was a good move on my part. All three of us were allowed to get all the comics they had available...which was a lot. (Plus, they made the line of comics age appropriate; so,my daughter didn't get some adult ones that looked like they'd be for kids. This shop also had a great sale. Any back issue 5 bucks or under was only $1.00. And, anything higher was 50% off. Besides my free comics, I walked out with a small box of comics.
Ok, here are the free comics I got:
G.I. Joe, Artifacts/Magdalena, Doctor Solar/Magnus Robot Fighter, Radical: Welcome To R Universe, War Of The Supermen, Green Hornet, Iron Man/THor, Iron Man/Nova, Sonic The Hedgehog, Bongo Comics, DC Kids, Toy Story, Shrek/Penguins Of Madagascar, The Tick, Mouse Guard/Fraggle Rock, Yow!, Owly and Friends, Archie's Summer Special, The Sixth Gun, World Of Aspen 2010, Fame: Lady Gaga, Classic Comic Strip: Action and Adventure/Blondie, Oni Press Free For All, Overstreet Guide To Collecting Comics, Love And Capes, The Stuff Of Legend/City Of Bones, Atomic Robo, Weathercraft and Other Unusual Tales, Irredeemable/Incorruptible, Storm Lion, Del Rey Showcase, Fearless Dawn, and Fractured Fables.
Oh, and I finished off at my lcs, and they let me take any I wanted...but, they did not have the variety that the second shop had. Excellent day full of great bargains! It was worth the 40 minute drive, for sure.
I can't believe some comic shops don't participate in this event. All the shops I went into seemed to have there best sale day ever. But, they also do some good promotions, especially Tacoma.
