Box Office 2016

The audience was loving it. People were laughing out loud at every joke. I don't like the Minions either, so I guess this humor style just isn't for me. lol
In my opinion, secret life of pets didn't have a lot to offer for adults. When you see a Pixar movie (or even some Dreamworks movies) it really gives a lot of emotion and story goodness for adults to chew on, that children may not understand. I didn't really get any of that from this movie.

I liked secret life of pets more than I liked that minions. I don't know what it is about the minions I just find them annoying. Don't get me wrong I loved despicable me but that was more gru Angus and the other two girls more than the.minions.

Suicide Squad Tracking for $125 million Debut

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Suicide Squad is on track for a massive opening weekend, with early tracking putting the film at a $125 million debut. With three weeks to go before the film is officially released though, there is still a chance for fluctuation in either direction. Should the Suicide Squad tracking be accurate, it will come in just behind Deadpool‘s $132 million opening weekend but far head of X-Men: Apocalypse‘s $65 million debut. Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy opened on a similar date in early of last August with $94.3 million it first weekend. Advance tickets for Warner Bros. Pictures‘ Suicide Squad will go on sale Friday, July 15.

From director David Ayer (Fury, End of Watch) comes Suicide Squad, starring Oscar nominee Will Smith (Ali, The Pursuit of Happyness), Oscar winner Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club), Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street, Focus), Joel Kinnaman (Netflix’s “House of Cards”) and Oscar nominee Viola Davis (The Help, Doubt).
It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?

Written and directed by Ayer based on the characters from DC Comics, the film also stars Jai Courtney (Insurgent), Jay Hernandez (Takers), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Thor: The Dark World), Ike Barinholtz (Neighbors), Scott Eastwood (Fury), Cara Delevingne (Paper Towns), Adam Beach (Cowboys & Aliens), and Karen Fukuhara in her feature film debut. It is produced by Charles Roven and Richard Suckle, with Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Colin Wilson and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers.
Suicide Squad opens worldwide in 3D, and in 2D, and in select IMAX 3D theaters beginning August 5, 2016.

So, any bets on the next movie this year, chronologically, that will break the 1B ceiling?

I think Star Wars and Amazing Beasts are the only viable options. Probably shouldn't count out Moana, but that would be a fourth breakout cartoon this year, so I have my doubts.

Agreed.

If Rogue One, Fantastic Beasts, and Moana are good all 3 will make a billion. Disney might have 4-5 of the top 5 grossing movies this year and they might have 5 billion dollar grossers

Interesting Article on the Box Office "Meltdown" for the year.

http://variety.com/2016/film/features/box-office-decline-summer-blockbusters-the-bfg-1201822322/

Says year to date is up 2% but receipts are down.

They talk a lot about the changing way people are viewing content, and the impact of social media causing bad word of mouth to spread much faster than normal. I would hope that means studios realize that they need to turn out better quality products but that all remains to be seen.

I really hope Dory can make it to the $1B club like her Disney siblings Zootopia and Civil War. As of Aug 8th WW gross is 870M, Dory will have 5-10M from domestic, 15-20M from Japan, whatever she will make in UK, and Germany and Italy yet to open.

Btw what's the chance of Secret Life of Pets passing BvS? Current WW now is 502M, there'll be 35-40M left domestic, 15-20M more (I guess) from South Korea, big markets yet to open are China, Japan (which are expected to make big), Russia, Australia, and 2nd-tier markets: Italy, Spain, Brazil. Making 330M more in foreign markets isn't easy but I don't think it's impossible.

And they still have Star Wars coming down the pipe.

Star Wars and Dr Strange, which will at the very least do decent business.

Star Wars and Dr Strange, which will at the very least do decent business.

And Moanna, which is very likely to gross considerably more than Dr Strange. This year is break-out year for animation, both at Disney and the whole industry; the biggest animation movies will beat the biggest CBMs.

Numbers of weekend Aug 12-14 are in. Highlights:

- In domestic market Secret Life of Pets (SLOP) passing BvS and becoming No 6 movie of the year with 336M.
- After being hit hard by Suicide Squad last weekend all other movies in Top 5 recover strongly this weekend with fantastic drop: Jason Bourne (-39%), Bad Moms (-18%), SLOP (-23%), Star Trek Beyond (-32%). No 11 of this weekend, Finding Dory, is down 28%.
- Sausage Party opens over expectation at 33M
- And the elephant in the room: Suicide Squad drop 67% in 2nd weekend, a bit better than BvS's 69%, though as an August movie SS is bound to have weekday number eating away from its weekend. That being said, having better leg than BvS (even in the summer) doesn't mean much.

- In international market Finding Dory passes BvS and became No 4 movie of 2016 globally with 892M WW, making Disney the distributor of all movie in Top 4 WW.
- Jungle Book and SLOP debut during Obon Festival in Japan, which is Jungle Book's last market, making 6M and 10.2M Thu-Sun and projected to make 30M and 40M total (weekend estimation and total projection are credited to Corpse from BOT forum. Jungle Book is likely to finish its global run with 980M, just 20M shy of 1B WW just like Dory is 20M shy of 500M DOM. However 980M is beyond expectation and will make Jungle Book the 27th movie WW, replacing HP 1.

What to look forward to next week:
- Jungle Book passes Deadpool DOM and becomes No 3 movie of the year in North America, making Disney the distributor of all movies in Top 3, though SLOP has a 50/50 chance to surpass Jungle Book.
- Debut of Ben-Hur (which personally I think smells like a slop) and Kubo (which looks intriguing especially for Laika fans)
- And Suicide Squad's drop in 3rd weekend will be interesting to see no matter what.

And Moanna, which is very likely to gross considerably more than Dr Strange. This year is break-out year for animation, both at Disney and the whole industry; the biggest animation movies will beat the biggest CBMs.

That's partially true, although I don't really see a film beating Civil War. The others? Sure. But I wouldn't be surprised if CW remained the number one movie of 2016.

Animation had a big year, but CW still out grossed them all. CBMs are still kings.

Disney is the movie industry right now, this year all top 5 movies will be Disney:

1) Rogue One

2) Captain America: Civil War

3) Zootopia

4) Finding Dory

5) The Jungle Book

What I meant is the total gross of the biggest animation movies this year will beat the total gross of the biggest CBMs.
