Boxofficemojo's All time worldwide opening weekend list is the most inaccurate list in their database.
Movies open at different dates all over the world, often weeks or months apart so they dont add all the numbers up.

Boxofficemojo typically adds the major bulk of territories that opened close to what the USA opening weekend date is and ignores the rest that come later. They also tend to add the grosses of the first 4-5 days from the OS markets.

Technically if you want to have a total worldwide sum of the opening weekend from all markets you have to wait for the movie to open everywhere and then add the numbers. DUH !

So here you go.

Just repeating my post here to show I’m very grateful for you creating this thread. Thanks dude!

Wow. I’ve been looking for something exactly like this! Thanks for taking the time and making the effort to put it together. IW’s opening looks even more insane with everything combined.

TFA opened before Xmas. It would have had a bigger opening in summer.

7 MCU films in the top 20. And Endgame and FFH will likely join the top 20.

So in short, by the time July rolls around, 9 of the top 20, almost 1/2 of the top 20 OWs all time belong to Marvel. Gotta love it.

Thanks for this thread @8ulk87 been meaning to look at this.
Definitely a few shocks on there, would have thought Incredibles 2 would have been there - did it have a staggered opening?
Also puts into perspective how bad BvS legs were, givent hat it made just over double it's opening weekend in the rest of it's run!

OOPS!! I missed that one. Apparently even though i double checked i somehow missed Incredibles 2. Added now ! Thanx for noticing.

2018 releases are sneaky!

Aquaman didnt make it to 300+ sadly.

P.S. BvS opening numbers dont make sense. I went through the data that boxoffice provides. It doesnt seem to be resonable for the actual number to be more than $390 mil. which would make more sense.
Even with horrible legs i dont think its possible to have half the gross be from the 3day opening.
Im gonna correct it to $400 mil from $422,5 mil which must be some kind of mistake.

Actually the domination of the MCU is even more hardcore than I thought. 5 of the top 11 ahead of Endgame which is going to be no.1 or 2 (so then 6 out of the top 12). And Avengers will be 1, 2 and 4 on the list!

How is even fair when all movies don't get releases in all the same markets? Isn't this just as flawed as what BOM does?

Its fair because you count the 3day opening weekend total from all territories for each movie.
Plain and simple.

So on this chart I guess CM will go up a bit when we know the Japan opening.

Avengers Infinity War is a beast and truly is in a league of its own.

Thanks for the list. May I ask how did you come up with the numbers? Did you go to each movie’s foreign box office page on Box office mojo and add the countries’ opening weekend gross up? Did you do it by hand or did you write a bot to add the numbers for you?

Your guess is correct. Box officemojo numbers from the foreign page added all the 3day openings for each country by hand.

You are doing a great service for people like me lol. Much appreciated mate.

Im going to update the list shortly.

-Add more movies for a top 70.
-Correct some mistakes by BOmojo.
-Going through the list again checking all movies one by one for more accurate numbers.
-For a lot of movies i had to guesstimate some opening weekends from some markets based on the totals as BO wasnt listing them.
-Will add a lot of heavy hitter movies that were missing.
-Only a couple of blockbusters will be missing from the list cause no numbers are available.

EDIT : All done!

Problem wiith these kind of lists is that in many countries movies often opens on other days. In Sweden (where I live), for example, movies (especially big blockbusters) opens often on Wednesdays and sites like BOM count all those days into the opening weekend numbers. So, trying to get accurate opening weekend numbers (Friday-Sunday) is probably an impossible task

Thats not an issue. You can still get the first 3 days.

What do you mean how ?

How the list was made ?

Adding the 3day opening grosses from each market with a calculator. (From boxofficemojo)
Where the 3day gross is missing you can guesstimate based on the total gross and trends (market specifics or month specifics ie december).

I checked every movie 2 or 3 times so i corrected lots of mistake i ve made originally.

The list is as accurate as it can be. For many films its as high as 99,9% accurate as every single data is available.

For many other films only small markets were missing the exact 3day figure so its still very accurate.

A few films are missing but thats because no data for 3day openings is available at all.

Added 19 movies to the list !

Harry Potter atSS - (2001)
Spider-Man - (2002)
Harry Potter atCoS - (2002)
The Matrix Reloaded - (2003)
Spider-Man 2 - (2004)
Harry Potter atPoA - (2004)
The Da Vinci Code - (2006)
007 Quantum of Solace - (2008)
2012 - (2009)
Fast Five - (2011)
Despicable Me 2 - (2013)
Godzilla - (2014)
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - (2014)
XMEN Apocalypse - (2016)
The Secret Life of Pets - (2016)
Transformers TLK - (2017)
It - (2017)
Antman & the Wasp - (2018)
Fantastic Beasts 2 tCoG - (2018)

Place 54 and down in the list.
