Boy to be suspended for picture shaved in the back of his head!

The school is basically saying that the artwork cut into his hair is a distraction to the rest of the students. I think it's BS and they are over reacting.

Fair, next.

You basically give up your rights going into the school system with dress policies and all that jazz. This is no surprise to me.

I'd say the school is overreacting on this.

I had two symbols cut in my hair for a couple of weeks in high school. Never got any fuss over them.

It was a fad when I was younger but didn't last long. If this isn't the type of school that requires uniforms then I think it's stupid to suspend the kid.

And it's not right that you are "giving up your rights" entering into the school system when, you know, it's kind of required by law that you do enter the school system.

What is more damaging to a child's education?

Having an NBA player shaved into the back of his head, or giving him a suspension, of which he will miss classes and lessons, because of said NBA player shaved into the back of his head?

There are a lot of worse things that a kid could get suspended from school for having besides this hair cut. This is just nonsense.

Typical school BS. The same thing recently happened to my nephew in Florida who is about the same age for coming to school with his hair dyed blue. Someone in the school doesn't like it, so they just say its a distraction, and can do whatever the hell they want about it. He's suspended until he colors it back.

It's all pretty ridiculous.

Probably has nothing to do with Bonner, it simply has to do with the school's dress code.

At this point, if people don't like the rule, they need to go to the school board meetings when they vote on the dress code policies for next year and make their thoughts known. Right now, if it is a part of that district's dress code, getting mad at the school, the principal, or whoever is pretty stupid....they are simply following the district's policy.

I think there are a lot of rules, ESPECIALLY, within school dress codes that are stupid, and I make sure that I am a part of the decision making team so that I can make my thoughts known.

It is funny that people have all kinds of opinions (mostly speaking about parents here)...when it comes to school dress codes, curriculum, etc...but you ask them to be on a committee that makes these decisions for the district that their child is in, and they run for the hills.

Stupid policy, IMO....YES, it is not a distraction in the classroom once the teacher says....oh look who is shaved on your head, ok guys back to work. BUT, at this moment it looks to be a part of the school's dress code, therefore you follow it or you don't and suffer the consequences until it is changed.

BTW, this is their dress code policy regarding hair...

[FONT=verdana, helvetica]Hair: Must be neat, clean, and well-groomed

  • No type of head covering, hat, cap, hair rollers, or long-handled combs may be worn inside the building
  • Symbols and/or styles which are identified with gang membership, affiliation, or representation are prohibited
  • Extreme hairstyles and/or unnatural coloring (blue, green, pink, etc.) are prohibited
  • Notched eyebrows are prohibited
  • Sideburns must be kept neatly trimmed and must not extend below ear level or flare at the bottom
This is my district's dress code regarding hair...
Unacceptable Hair and Grooming
 No facial hair allowed. Students will be required to shave immediately if facial hair is noticeable.
 No gang-related, profane, vulgar or otherwise distracting hairstyle, or design cut into the hair
 Any tattoo cut into skin shall be covered at all times
 Inappropriate hair color that is a distraction to the learning environment e.g. orange, green, etc.
 Hair must be neat and clean

No facial hair? **** that. That's beard discrimination at it's worst.

Yeah, and I don't know about your school, but my school was pretty damn lenient on the "neat, clean and well groomed hair" part of those rules.

I looked at the picture of the kids hair. Maybe they made the right decision. If I was sitting behind him, I wouldn't want to stare into the cold dead eyes of Bonner. It's not like you can look away either, they just stare unrelentingly into your very soul.

I had a Quicksilver logo shaved into the back of my head when i was at school. Teachers didn't seem to mind. In fact my gym teacher thought it was awesome.

Follow the dress code and this wouldnt have happened. I'm all for freedom of expression, but rules are rules. This kid would have been just fine without that garish haircut. If anyone is to blame its the parents for allowing the haircut in the first place and not knowing school rules.

Besides in school suspension is usually a non issue. They have you copy a bunch of lines, definitions, pages out of books, etc.

If it was a school given suspension we have to give them all of their work when they get back....if they chose the suspension over in school suspension then we don't. But, yeah, this wasn't an expulsion so not that big of a deal. BUT, unless he gets his hair taken care of.....he will have to stay out of school and it will then turn into unexcused absences....right now they are probably excused.

And yes, even though I think these types of rules are silly.....the point is, it is a rule, and should have been followed.

It would have been a distraction with my kiddos....but some schools don't even let you have a design shaved into the hair....this was WAY over the top.

Let's translate this into the real world for a minute.

You start a new job. At orientation, you are given a copy of the company's dress code. In it is a list of what is unacceptable and the penalties for violating it. A year or so later, you violate said dress code. The boys sees you as soon you walk in and sends you home for the day without pay.

See, it's more than just the school wanting to make up stupid rules. It's about preparing students for the stupid rules they're going to have to deal with later in life.

Generally, however, I find that schools are much more strict than real jobs in terms of adering strictly to policies and whatnot.

It honestly seems like the people who run schooled are always REALLY obsessed with maintaining strict social order and dominance over their students...to the point it gets bizarre, IMO. It's probably second only to the military.

A strict learning environment is kind of like a stick shift. If you learn to drive stick, you can drive anything. Learn to deal with a strict boss, you can deal with any boss.

Not really. It also prohibits creativity and individuality. Greatly. Thusly molding most of our youth into brainless worker drones to fit into the overal societal tapestry.

What a waste of time for everyone. The kid's obviously desperate for attention, and the teachers should be focusing on something that's actually important - like anything at all besides this. Maybe some kid's locker is broken.
