Brave and the Bold Casting Thread

I am curious how much Corenswet will be the model for casting going forward with the big names. Fan favourite, ultra traditional, relatively unknown, experienced but also at a point in their career where signing up for a massive ongoing role feels like a sensible career move and not a lucrative but career consuming time sink, etc.

If Superman Legacy does gangbusters at the box office, very much so.

He's praised a lot the Christopher Revee as Superman/Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool/RDJ as Iron Man type of castings in the sense of casts that feel so definitive as if said actor was born to play the role they were given, so my guess would be that's the model he's going for. Corenswet fit that bill, same with Brosnahan as Lois and allegedly Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy. I don't think "massive fan-casts" or "relative unknowns" are the actual pre-requisites he's looking for, but rather "can embody a quintissential version of a character and has the potential for the character to become synonymous with them".

If Jon Hamm was 10 years younger, he'd probably be Gunn's choice for Batman.

Nowadays, as far as that type goes, there really is only one man that currently checks all those boxes for Batman...

It is bittersweet because while the casting choices are all very... sufficient, they're also not... Exciting? I know how every single one of those actors will play the role and that immediately makes the whole project less intriguing. Like, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy for example is... good, very good actor... but he's so on the nose that it feels like a fan cast and not an actual creative or interesting choice. It just fully feels like a cast list I'd see a fan make on here.

Man are we ever in agreement about Pace though. I don't even really want this movie to happen but I'll still be so disappointed with whoever it is for a hot second when it isn't Pace.

I don't think anyone but James Gunn can pear into the mind of James Gunn
I'd say so but he's been pretty direct and outspoken throughout his entire directing history about his thought process in regards to well, everything, so it's mostly speculation based on stuff he's directly said in the past. Now, is it possible he'll just change his mind on his usual criteria randomnly when it comes to this? Maybe. Is it likely? Right now there is no real reason to think so, so there is no reason to currently look over his past criteria.

Yeah I'm scrambling on trying to find other alternatives, especially choices under 40, but man the more I think again about Pace the more I'd be shocked if Gunn doesn't actually go through with him because he fits like... literally every bill in regards to what it /seems/ he'd want?

He fits his height obsession, he fits the same Corenswet/Brosnahan/Gisondo style of hyper-traditional comic booky castings, he fits the fact that Gunn favors people he's worked with in the past, he's at a point in his career where there'd be zero downside or reason for him not to take the role and fully commit to it. I'm desperately trying to find someone else to not keep coming back to him but man he just has the upper hand on far too many things.

Also he is one of the few actors I could see doing as cool a job with the eyes under the cowl as Robert in The Batman so there's that.

These castings are too good to be good guys. So good in fact that this movie doing better than average financially is unlikely.

It's gotten to the point that I've already started hearing Pace's voice in my head when I read some of my favorite Batman panels, like this one from Batman (Volume 3) #23.

Lee's natural voice is already amazing for Batman, to the extent that I think whatever Bat-voice he'd come up with, making his voice deeper than it already is or growlier would instantly be flat-out legendary and iconic. Literally insane just to imagine it.

It's also really easy to imagine his voice in the playboy Bruce setting.

What about James Wolk? 38, 6’2. Probably 40 or so by time production gets going.

He’s got a bunch of TV credits including HBO’s Watchmen but has yet to breakthrough to A-list.

I've only seen him in Watchmen but there is pretty much nothing in his vibe that'd make me want him as Bruce based on that, realize it's a really small sample on my part though. Not sure if I'm super big on his look too.

Wolk screams more Clark Kent to me , in terms of vibe ,than Bruce Wayne.
Though, he's always reminded me of a young George Clooney.

If they were going for a much lighter Batman like The Brave And Bold cartoon , I could see it , but I have a hard time seeing him as the brooding, darker, Batman.

The thing with even the Brave and the Bold cartoon is that, once again, that's another take where Batman was mostly stoic and took everything deadly serious. Diedrich Brader performance leaned a lot into that, so idk if I'd even buy Wolk as that type of Batman. Like I said, I'm not sure there is actually that big a difference between casting for a "lighter" take on Batman and a darker one.

I disagree with you there, but we'll have to agree to disagree as far as that goes.

I wouldn’t be opposed to a more light-hearted approach. Not full camp, but something more akin to Kevin Conroy / DCAU, or even Affleck’s portrayal in The Flash.

Doesn’t need to be Wolk—Pace couldn’t easily fit that bill—but something to differentiate further from the Reeves universe.

Has Finn Wittrock gotten any better? I was always pretty blah on him but he could have potential on looks alone. Seems like it’s mainly Ryan Murphy keeping him employed though, so probably not a great sign for his range:

Kevin Conroy and Affleck in The Flash are good examples of what I mean in terms of why in practice it shouldn't make as much of a difference to cast for a "lighter" Batman than for a darker one. Conroy was a very light hearted Batman in the first few seasons of TAS but then easily played a colder darker one later on, Affleck was a very dark Batman but then played lighter.

Honestly if an actor has enough range to play Bruce Wayne and Batman well, they probably also have enough range to go darker or lighter on Batman depending on the context/project. Like I think Pace, Gyllenhaal, Ethan Peck are all capable of going one way or the other for that, and would arguably do a better/funnier job at it than some of the comedian names proposed.

There are probably some actors that'd only be good at one or the other but those actors shouldn't even be cast for this anyway.

That being said I don't think they should go light-hearted for this take on Batman at all as I find the Bruce-Damian dynamic more interesting when he's a miserable bastard confronted with someone that's basically a mini-me even edgier version of him, not to mention it'd serve the DCU well to have a Batman that can grow and develop over the course of 10 years rather than one that's fine in the head from movie 1, but that's another topic.

As far as Finn Wittrock goes... no. He looks 25 and yet is 40 so he's the worst of both worlds in that sense, he looks tiny, he's not exciting as an actor at all, so I really do think we can do better than him lol

Not endorsing this idea because I don't like his look at all, but throwing his name out there:

Colin Woodell: December 20, 1991. (31 now) Will be 33-34 when filming. 6'0

Heard he's good in The Continental.

I considered him a while back, but ultimately I felt that he doesn't give off much of a dad vibe.

I know Bruce isn't an orthodox father figure, but there should still be a paternal air about him.

Fancasting Dick and potentially Tim and Jason for this feels like a bit of a hopeless proposition due to the likelihood of it being complete unknowns being quite high and the fact that at least for Dick the age range could really be anywhere from 18-30 right now as we aren't sure how old Batman will be, but here's a list of young actors that could be in contention anyway (some data could be wrong as admittedly I aided myself with using Bing Chat for the info on ages and heights since it was too much of a hassle to individually search for it)

I will say that if Lee Pace were to be cast as Batman, it'd be intriguing to have Elordi as Nightwing:

Elordi looks a lot like Dick Grayson, he has that atlethic physique that's pretty believable for a gymnast, his star has been consistently on the rise and almost about as famous as any actor of his age would be, and if Lee Pace were to be cast as Batman, I can very easily picture a father-son dynamic between the two. With both of them being 6'5 and having similar builds it'd also create an interesting visual dynamic with Grayson being the prodigal son and all that, especially if they plan to follow Morrison's run and have Dick become Batman at some point.
