Brazilian Soccer Ref Decapitated - [Insert Clever Headline Here]

Fans riot after their team loses. Fans riot after their team wins. Doesn't matter if it's soccer, college football, pro football, basketball, or hockey. (Baseball is so boring, it's still a rarity.) Hell, hockey games are more notorious for riots and fan violence after Stanley Cup games than even the European hooligans.

Here's a list of just some violent spectator incidents in sports over the past century+, including right here in the good ol' US of A:

As I said, there are violent incidents here as well, but not on the level of the one detailed in the OP. When a mob of fans in the US sets upon a referee (or anyone else), kills, decapitates and dismembers him and then displays the desecrated corpse, you'll have a case that the behavior is equivalent. Unless they start selling meth instead of beer at stadiums I don't see that happening here.

Not really.

Despite what you hear on Fox News people around the world aren't all running around shouting down with America.

People have opinions (sometimes stupid opinions) but people around the world hold no better or worst views of America than they do of any other country. Go to any nation and you will find people who talk trash about other countries or the people in those countries its not a unique thing.

I'm not trying to start any argument or criticise you Terry but I do notice you seem to have a slight chip on your shoulder about the rest of the world and the U.S.

Have you had some horrible experience overseas or something?

Nah, I'm as liberal as they come, I just hear a lot of **** talking online. It is what it is.

Soccer has a much larger audience than any American sport. Hence there will naturally be more incidents.

But this really is a dumb argument and I'm not sure why it's so important to defend the integrity of American sports when no one was impugning them in the first place. It all comes off as overly defensive and sensitive.

It is completely ridiculous. There are crazy fans in every sport. This has little to do with the sport and everything to do with why there was an incident at all. Why did the referee have a knife in the first place?

Maaannnn! that is coo- coo for coco puffs crazy! i dig some football but nothing to illicit that type of behavior! and Sports fans want to say comic guys are nuts!!( the worst i have seen at a comic con is dudes being obnoxious!:cwink:) I always see fights and &^%^$ break out at sporting events,( Philadelphia eagles fans throwing beer bottles!) but this takes the cake!

Spanish language news is here, tonights top story, the sewers run red with the referee's blood! Aye-yi-yi-yi

It was terrible timing for that quote though.

I just want to ask all of the people who did this if at any point they stopped and thought "Why am I doing this?" Obviously not, and I want to know why. Mob mentality, I'm guessing, but seriously how does something like this happen? What psychologically has to happen to turn otherwise normal civil people into a mob that cuts up a man over a SPORT!?!? It just makes my head hurt even thinking about the level of stupidity shown here.

Its amazing seeing some of you on your high horses about this. As if this is something that happens everyday in soccer.

True that, remember what happened to Monica Seles in tennis, deranged fan ran out to her on the court and stabbed her in the neck. And this is tennis for crying out loud.

That may be true but when did going to referee a soccer game become a blood sport?

Before everybody gets too far ahead in this "it's only a game....when did it become a blood sport?!?" outrage, keep in mind that the (alleged) facts in the case are that the referee stabbed and killed a player on the field first, and his relatives stormed the field and killed him in payback. Yes, it's still medieval savagery, but the killing isn't about the sport: it's about revenge for a slain family member.

We (mostly) all agreed on that already. What still is not answered was how this happened in the first place.

well reports say player he stabbed attacked him for ejected him from the game

Way to take a piece of pocket lint and make a sinister global conspiracy theory that goes all the way to the top of the European Union there pal. :o

I was just pointing out, that it wasn't cuz of soccer. He didn't blow a call, it was cuz he stabbed a guy.

I'm not offering any judgement about whether it was warranted or not. I'm just saying he stabbed a guy.

Yes, he stabbed him but that still doesn't go far enough back to explain having a knife in the first place. Was he threatened or feel threatened before this game? Is it normal for him to be toting a knife? Somehow I don't think that was the case.
