Buying Movies: The Future

You know whats bullcrap? Not being able to watch movies without an internet connection. That is bullcrap. I prefer physical media for very practical reasons. And books? Its not a matter of nostalgia that I find it easier to read words on paper rather than a screen. Also digital forms of media put the control of access into fewer and fewer hands.

Word.

AFAIC, I buy hardcopy of movies I really like ( usually SFX movies ) and I download the rest.

It is nice and easy to say that digital copies are the future but there are a crap load of people who aren't deep into the new tech and their expertize on the subject ends at plugging a DvD/BR player on their TV.

I like hard copies. I've never downlaoded anything.

To the guy who says people like me must like looking at the box on the shelf gathering dust....90% of the DVDs I own are out of their box, in a paper sleeve, and in media boxes that hold hundreds of discs.

I've been around for a long time and have sen all kinds of ups and downs with life. I just think it's better to depend upon me having to cross the room and look into a box for my movie fix than relying solely upon technology outside of my control.

I still buy my movies; i like having a physical copy of it. In fact, i like having my cd's and books too; i hate reading a book from my laptop, i prefer having it in my hand. Call me a bookwork or geek, but i still love the smell of new books :woot:

So yeah, i guess i'm old fashioned.

This is going to be a little bit of a rant, but people really need to stop having bull**** nostalgia about physical media. They really do. It's such a stupid thing to latch onto. This idea that it's somehow inherently better to have books movies and music and games taking up space in your home, collecting dust, only to be thrown into a landfill some day, rather than taking up disk on a HDD on your computer or a media server or in a datacenter somewhere is ridiculous. It seems like most people enjoy the plastic box sitting on their shelf more than the actual content itself.

Between watching movies on demand and subscribing to Netflix a couple of years ago, I don't think I've bought a single movie. It seems like such a primitive idea to me now.

i like my movies without the internet.

i like my books without my retinas being burned out by a screen.

and i like my vinyl records because the sound quality is superior to any other format.

I've 100% moved to digital music, I've got the hard copies of CDs in a storage case, but when I recently moved threw out the originals cases.

For movies I mostly rent them on Netflix, unless it's something I really liked. In the past year that's included the Marvel Studios movies and Horrible Bosses. I do think streaming is the future and was going to not buy a bluray player because of that, but when my DVD player broke, decided to make the upgrade. Love the combo packs, mostly for the digital version, since it's nice to watch a movie on my phone during a plane ride or on the treadmill.

Video games are a different story right now though, I've got a number of X-Box Live Arcade and Wii Virtual Console games. Full games however, I'm not on board with, downloaded Lego Batman because it was a silly spur of the moment purchase and didn't want to go to the store and look for it, it took probably 3-4 hours to complete. I've got a pretty good connection too, figured a Lego game couldn't be that big, but I guess I was mistaken. So until game downloads get quicker, for the full games it's physical copies for me.

Physical copies off of Amazon. Brick and mortar stores are for peasants.

I buy Blu-Rays...but only because there isn't currently a good place to buy movies online from. I don't want to watch them or store them on my computer because that's gonna take up space and I could lose them in a system crash.

I'm waiting for Cloud to become more stable and then a good place via TV to download from.

As for music...I only buy digital. If a band doesn't release digitally I don't bother.
