Can someone fill me in on some Marvel continuity?

Can someone explain what happened in the Marvel universe during the Hero's Return / Hero's Reborn time. All I know is that Marvel started the majority of their titles over at #1, and then a year later started them over again. What was the deal with that. Thanks in advance.
