This past year at college, I was in a single dorm. This worked out well except one thing, it completely ruined my sleeping schedule.

Normally, I'd go to bed at 1, no later than 2, at college. However, since I was by myself, there was no reason to start shutting things down. I'd just stay up watching Adult Swim and goofing off on my computer. I'd stay up until 3, sometimes even 4. This has translated poorly to the summer. I'm unemployed, so there's no need to get up early but I hate waking up at 12:30-1:30.

About a week ago, I decided I'd try to do something to change this. I made up some guidelines for myself. I don't drink any soda after 9pm, at 12pm I turn my main computer and go to my room. By 1pm, I start reading (usually sooner) and try to finish at 2 (though it's sometimes hard to stop so I go past it sometimes).

However, this hasn't worked out. I still am up till almost 4am, but now I'm just laying in bed trying to go to sleep.

Anyone have some tips?

The title is a reference to The Simpsons. It's not meant to be taken literally.

Jerk it until you pass out. It's age old science.

OR

Set your alarm early so you're forced to wake up. This will guarantee your ass in bed at an earlier time the next evening. But then again, fapping...

Get an 8am job = you will be tired by 9pm.

Also, you should be praising the dorm gods everyday that you are blessed with a single room. That is awesome.

My roommates were satan. All of them, they combined into satan.

I'm going through the same problem, and I have a job. :csad:

My techniques so far, even though they don't work all the time:

1. Force yourself to watch a boring movie.
2. Read a book, preferably something with small print.
3. Listen to classical music with headphones.
4. Turn a fan on. The sound actually relaxes me. I need mild noise.
5. ^ Do any of the above while in bed.

The lights from the t.v. , computer , and lamp can trick your brain into thinking it's not as late ( according to my gf). You have to start shutting everything down sooner..maybe. I was working noon to 8pm and staying up until three or four in the morning everyday. Then I got a different job and was worried I wouldn't be able to break the habit. Luckily I was tired those first few days and would go to bed around 10pm.

Hard Rock or any form of Rock does it for me...but mostly it keeps me awake. If I really like the song, I get pissed cause I keep falling in and out of sleep, and then I keep re-starting the song.

sounds interesting experience.

Hell, you think you have it bad? I am home for the summer with no job. My sleep schedule is *****ed. Some nights I wake up at 1am and stay up to 6pm, other times I be awake for over 24 hrs and get only 4hrs of sleep for the trouble. But reading a book seems to work at putting you to sleep though.

I'd turn off everything a few hours before your bedtime & read a good book. Drinking a warm glass of milk with a dash of nutmeg before bed is a good remedy for insomnia. I'd also not recommend sleeping pills, they could be habit forming. Good luck catching somes zzzzzzzzzzzz.

Does the clown look like Tim Curry?

When I was in college I stayed up literally all night every night until like 8 AM (as I had no classes ever until the late afternoon) playing video games with my friends and going for "nature walks" with special "herbs." I've seldom gone to bed before 3 or 4 AM since

Stay up all night and go to bed early next morning.

Ditto Ultra Lantern. Some sleeping pills, maybe Tylenol PM or just some Nyquil.

Or, you know, booze.

Man, I am just envious of anyone having a single dorm. I am filling out the paperwork in hopes of getting one right now. Not dealing with anyone else would be worth the extra money to me.

As for sleeping issues, I would try reading a book in the evening, with very little writing in the room.

I can't believe so many didn't get this reference.

I've never had any issues sleeping. Maybe because in College I worked full time and went to school full time and tried to have a social life part time. I could literally sleep anywhere, anytime.

Actually, I use to sleep during my breaks at college.

Avoid caffeine after 4pm (this includes Tea, Coffee, Cola).

Before 8pm get at least half an hour of exercise that makes you break a sweat.

At 8pm take a warm bath. Do NOT eat or drink anything which has sugar in it after this time.

After that read a book for an hour or two with classical or soft rock / pop playing in the background.

When in bed, preform some relaxation exercises. This is the one I usually do, lying down, first take a breath, hold it while you stretch your toes, relax your toes as you release the breath. Next do the same for your calf muscles, then your thigh muscles. Keep going for each muscle group in your body, ending with the head (which requires making really silly faces as you tense those particular muscle groups).

Now that you've forced your muscles to relax, close your eyes and think of something that has little or no meaning that relaxes you. My sister uses the colour blue. I think of snow falling, imagining each flake as it's coming down through the sky.

Set the alarm for 6 am. Get out of bed no later than 615. Then go do something for the day. Mow the lawn clean the attic. Just keep yourself busy. the rest will work itself out.

Also you may want to consider selling the clown bed and upgrading to the big boy model

Second semester of college messed up my sleeping schedule, especially the last few weeks.

From the end of March untill I got out in May I had constant overlapping writing assignments, mostly research based for 4 out of my 5 classes. Its fairly difficult to research for one paper while at the same time writing another. The last 3 weeks after easter I would get up at 8 go to class at 9, go from class to work at 2:30. Get off work at 5:30 and eat dinner. From 6 until about 4 I would work on various papers and then get up at 8 and do it all again. Fairly often a paper would end up taking me the whole night so I'd only sleep for an hour or not at all. It was ridiculous.

My sleep schedule this summer is short but at least regular. I fall asleep sometime between 1 and 2 and get up for work at 6. Totally livable.

Today I woke up at around 11:30 but didn't get out of bed until 12 (wasn't in a rush to get up since our cleaning lady was here today).

Replies to some suggestions:
Tried warm milk once, didn't work.
I need silence when I read, so music isn't an option then. Will try it as I'm trying to sleep. I often think about other things when I'm trying to sleep which I'm sure doesn't help.
The book I'm reading does have small print, but it's also really good and hard to put down (Game of Thrones if you're wondering)

A single dorm was alright. This year I'm in a suite with 3 other guys. We have our own bedrooms but I'm looking forward to having a kitchen.

Take sleeping pills.

Sleeping pills don't get you on a normal schedule, they just knock you out. I can't drink alcohol.

Stay up all night and go to bed early next morning.

I once read that one way to get back on a normal sleep schedule is to stay up for almost 48 hours and then go to sleep at the desired time you want to. But I think that would just be a disaster.

so here is what you do

Drink some Nyquil at 9pm, and then some warm milk

Keep a bottle of nodoze by your bed, with a can of Red Bull... when your alarm hits at 7am, pop two pills, and chug the bottle...

there ya go... problem solved
