Case won against Youtube to obtain user info!

"The data would not be publicly released but disclosed only to the plaintiffs, and it would include less specific identifiers than a user's real name or e-mail address."

Sounds like it will just be user name and the times watched. It's really not a big deal.

This is ******ed and an infringement of rights.

Actually, the plaintiffs don't even get the information, just counsel and advisors for both sides get to view it and it's going to be very tightly controlled. The judge also put provisions in place that specifically prohibit any individual end users from being prosecuted or sued in any way shape or form as well. So, yeah, while I'm not all that fond of the decision they did at least take some precautionary measures. No need to go Chicken Little over this one.

I get the feeling that very few internet users are going to take the time to read into it like you did...so I think we're gonna see a lot of people freaking out about this.

Then they are dumb.

Ever since Google bought YouTube, it's become lame.... think about it, all the leaked videos, home videos with sound clips from PURCHASED CDs, fan trailers ALL being taken down and their user being banned. YouTube was like our Tortuga, know that it's controlled this much, where do we go? They're trying to lock us down men. With bills being passed in Europe and just recently in Canada for the ISPs to monitor users downloads and report them to the government, it looks like the second age of Piracy is coming to an end. Enjoy your last few moments as they last, because in twenty years, it will all become history.

If you believe Piracy will die then you are thinking very narrowly. Since the invention of "ethics," there have been Pirates defying those codes. Be it, plundering and pillaging on the open seas, stealing from those that have and sharing with those that do not (Robin Hood), etc.

In 20 years Piracy will not be gone. It is like saying the more advanced law enforcement becomes, the less crime there will be. As the law advances, so do the lawless. It's a power struggle which forces both sides to remain sharp and refine themselves and evolve.

ugh. i don't want people knowing which videos i watch!
they'll think i'm somekind of perv. :(

Now that's some good honesty. I mean ya, it's no ones buisness if I'm watching beasta.....err....porn....I mean um....wholesome mindless ramblings of ppl who think we give a damn about their reactions to the change in color of the fur of the 2 toothed golden marmaset....ya that's it.

I honestly don't think this is a big deal, it's like said above it's not like their giving out info to anyone who wants it. However at the same time the second you take away privacy or a right, it rarely comes back. My Grandma used to tell me when she was cooking that you can always add ingredients, but you can't take them back out once you mix it in. Same philosophy, a freedom or right to privacy taken away can be a small one but it can add up over time.

Bad move by Viacom. Let's not forget about last year when a show owned by Viacom played a guys youtube video on there show. The guy recorded the show with them playing his video and uploaded to his account to show people that a show, showed his video. viacom asked youtube to take down this guys video because of copyright, when really, he was just putting up something Viacom took from him in the first place.

Is Viacom wrong to get there content down? No. Is this way the best way? No. Viacom will go through my history and see if I watched any copyright martial. This means they can ban my account for watching copyrighted videos. What if I click on a video that has a copyright part to it and I didn't know in advance?

If someone has copyright stuff, then ban them. This is the person who has uploaded the content and youtube's problem, not mine.

So they're going to ban people who have watched copyrighted things?

If you have been watching copyrighted material on youtube, Viacom can get your account banned. They can come after you one way or another.

Wrong, Chicken Little. The ruling by the judge specifically prohibits individual end users from being persecuted or prosecuted and only the counsel for each side in the case as well as their advisors have any access to the provided data. The ONLY way the data can be used is as evidence that Youtube is/was hosting copyrighted material owned by Viacom. That's it.

Where have you ever read that they can now go through everyone's account and ban whoever had anything to do with copyright infringement? Don't make stuff up and then try to freak other people out with it.
