Little Foot makes some good points about Kong. He maned up and Glory forgave him. Shows some good growth on Kong's part. Still sucks for Harry, though.
Yeah, I wonder how Glory feels about Harry though. I also wonder if harry will be knid or a bit mean next time he sees Glory.

Heh, well I guess I was wrong that I would miss this episode. Saw it and enjoyed it.

Gwen wasn't quite as broken up as I thought, so at least she's not going to immediately become the Gwen that was killed off for being a crybaby. Though I was spot on the money with the Brock thing.

The Goblin backflip...cool.

The beginning of LSD Harry, Sally Avril finally gets some comeuppance, and John Jameson!

I've been thinking that instead of just doing the shuttle story from TAS they could adapt an earlier story: In the first Rhino story John was also exposed to cosmic spores that augmented his natural abilities and also made him incredibly violent. Spidey had to stop him.

Who here thinks Weisman may adapt THAT story but substitute the spores for the symbiote?

Dunno...that would make the symbiote's appearance pretty redundant.

Another solid episode, and with quite a few interesting twists on Spider-Man canon. First of all, the Green Goblin was perfect, especially the voice acting. I thought the guy who did the voice for the Green Goblin in the 80s and later 90s cartoons was the definitive voice for the Goblin, but this guy nails it. He managed to sound devious, clever, and also bat-**** crazy without being over-the-top. Not to mention the fight sequences were terrific, especially the scene in which the goblin backflips over a building and lands on his glider after it plowed through it. "Wow," indeed. And I liked the fact that the creators choose to make the Goblin's real identity be in doubt, implying that he may actually be Harry taking whatever that green goop is in order to boost his confidence and escape from his problems, thus also making a nod to the drug storyline from the original comics.

I also liked the way Mary Jane was handled, too. She comes across as a genuinely nice, carefree, and confident young woman with a sly sense of humor (loved how she one-upped the "in-crowd," especially with Flash and Sally) and yet is not the total self-centered ditz that some of her early appearances in the comics made her out to be. It actually makes the competition between her and Gwen (who you couldn't help but feel a bit sorry for) for Peter's affections that much more interesting rather than making it so one sided. Plus, I liked how, rather than ending it on MJ going off with someone else, she waited until Peter came back to save the last dance for him. Sounds like a keeper to me.

And with the arrival of John Jameson and Eddie believing Peter has really hurt Gwen's feelings, it looks like we got the ingredients for the eventual "black costume saga" to get underway. Interesting to see how that's going to develop. Of course, next week is Doc Ock, and I'm really interested to see what happens there. So far, so good.

I meant that instead of using the spores, it's the symbiote that makes him stronger and more violent, not keeping the spores in the story.

Or do you mean that having it make someone else strong and mean before Peter would take away from the story?

Yeah, I felt that it would take away from the story a bit, especially since Peter should then be aware of its problems, and should naturally choose to avoid it, no matter how tempting its power is.

I loved the episode.

I think so far, it is the best voice acting of Peter Parker in the series, it WAS Peter Parker/Spider-Man, just like how i vision him in the comics. Awesome stuff.

Another great review!

If nothing else, this ep explained how Harry got so damn good at football. I wonder if Goblin juice is their way of referencing his drug problem in the 70s. (Or 80s?)

I really like how they characterized Mary Jane--she knows she's the center of attention and enjoys it, but she isn't shallow or catty. Classic MJ. I loved how she handled Sally. I can't stand her inexplicable hate for Peter. Great voice for her also.

I agree that Harry is a red herring. The stuff he drank is more than likely to emulate his drug problem from the comics. I'm thinking that at least the viewers will find out who GG is in The Uncertainty Principle.

The part where GG jumps over the building while his glider crashes through the window and comes out the other side and he lands on it: "Wow...just wow.":woot:

My problem with MJ is that she is just too cool for school. And while I recognize him as our protagonist, I can't help wondering what she sees in Parker. There were no scenes explaining the chemistry. She just shows up on his doorstep and BAM! they're made for each other. Did that feel a little off to anybody else?

Aside from that, did Sally always have a Jersey accent?

Well, if that was to happen, I don't think ti would be the goblin juice that he would take. Also, it happened in the 1970's, ASM issue #96.

She has "a great personality," remember? :)
I don't know, I guess I agree--but it's not like she knows anyone else, and she seems to be a genuinely nice person, and just because she didn't ditch Peter doesn't mean that she's into him.

Well, she does seem a bit attracted to him so far. Who knows what'll happen in the future.

More like red harryng. Or even red hairing.
Perhaps a...green herring?

I don't see why not. They don't really make "don't do drugs" episodes of cartoon shows these days. Goblin Juice might be the perfect substitute for, say, Crystal Meth.

That's my guess. Kudos to them for doing so.

Goblin Juice should be marketed right alongside this lovely item:

Well from a comic view, she knew he was Spider-Man before they actually met. She may have hated the fact that he was always in danger but she also admired his bravery and sense of responsibility, something not too many kids his age had.

On top of that stuff, Peter is an all around great guy, a rare catch from all the dudes we've seen in the show. Gwen is probably attracted to Peter for some of the same reason's MJ is.

You're probly still, I hope to see more actual chemistrty in the future.

Oh, and the GG fight was AMAZING.

This is a pretty smart show and I continue to be impressed by it. Watching it is like seeing some of the old Essentials come to life; classic Spidey throughout.

There's a decent sized character roster that doesn't get skimped on development, the action scenes are great and the storytelling is ...spectacular.

This episode was right up there. Green Goblin is my favorite villain so far. The exchanges between he and Spider-Man were great. MJ made quite the impression and it'll be interesting to see how Gwen fits into this looming triangle.

Everything else I could say has pretty much been covered. They manage to squeeze an awful lot into 30 minutes. Still not crazy about the animation, but I'm definitely loving the show. It's reigning supreme in my DVR. :o :spidey:

"Catalysts" marks the first real appearance of my favorite Spider-Man villain, the Green Goblin. So, needless to say, I've been anticipating this one for a long time, and it did not disappoint.

I loved the Green Goblin. Cheeks' design looked great, like an updated version of Ditko's design that took out all the hokey aspects of it. I love the Goblin, but even I'll admit that Ditko's design was always very hokey looking. Steve Blum just nailed that voice. His cackle was as good as Mark Hamill's Joker cackle.

I think I'll take this moment to compliment the casting and voice direction on this series. Jamie Thomason is a genius. He, along with Andrea Romano, are the two best voice directors in the business. I'm loving what I've been hearing. Vanessa Marshall was terrific as Mary Jane. Very sexy voice. And I've been a fan of Steve Blum since I first saw "Cowboy Bebop" six years ago. As soon as I heard him on that show as Spike, I knew he was going to go places. Unfortunately, most of the time it seems he gets hired just to do the Spike voice, and it's a great voice, don't get me wrong, but it's nice to see what else he can do. The man has range. His Goblin was excellent, and blows every other Goblin voice actor out of the water. It's like the voice I always had in my head when reading the comics without ever quite knowing what that voice was. I felt the same way about Robert Englund's Vulture, come to think of it. Okay, tangent over.

This version of the Green Goblin seems to have just about everything that I love about the character going for him. Smart, cunning, insane, ambitious, and more than a match for the spectacular Spider-Man. This is the first villain (aside from Tombstone) that really, really, really felt like a real threat. Which is as it should be. The Green Goblin is an A-List villain. Him, Doc Ock, Kingpin, Venom and the original Hobgoblin have always been the elite of Spidey's rogues gallery. So, it is great to finally, after all these years, see him being done justice in one of the cartoon series. The 90s series didn't do him justice. Neither did the 80s series or "The Amazing Friends". The movie came very close but didn't quite nail it. But, between Blum's Green Goblin and Alan Rachins' Norman Osborn, I think we have a winner here.

Tombstone was great last episode and I am really enjoying him in this episode. I no longer lament the lack of the Kingpin. Tombstone is just fun. I love how cool he is under pressure, and how he's able to get Spider-Man to protect him like that. I also thought it was great how instead of fleeing, he stayed and helped Spider-Man look for the bomb.

But where would I be if I didn't discuss Mary Jane? I already said that Vanessa Marshall sounds great, and I love Cheeks' character design for her. I've called this the first time Mary Jane has appeared outside the comic book medium. The 90s series had a character named Mary Jane Watson, but that wasn't Mary Jane Watson. The movies turned MJ into Gwen-Lite. But here she was smart, witty, funny, and someone you'd want to hang out with. I also suspect that she already knows Peter is Spider-Man. Poor Gwen. Hell, poor Flash... he's going to have to dress up like a cheerleader.

And poor Harry. Glory used him to get back at Kenny. Now he's drinking "Gobulin Green #994" (Nice "Gargoyles in-joke there, Greg.) Also, nice red herring. But no, I don't think he's the Green Goblin, if that is what they're trying to make us think. For one, how would he know about Tombstone being the Big Man? For another, how would he know about the Tech-Flight glider? Besides, after Hammerhead tried to blackmail Norman in the last episode, taking out Tombstone would probably be at the top of Norman's to-do list. If anything, Harry taking the formula looks like a great way to tell the Harry drug addiction story. Cool. Also, Norman was more than conspicuous in his absence... except that he wasn't really absent.

"Randy?"
"Very!"
How did that get past Standards and Practices??? Nice!

Looking forward to Dr. Octopus next week. Come to think of it, I am beyond amused that Doc Ock makes his villainous debut in the eighth episode of the series.
