CG Japanese pop star makes her U.S. debut in July

The tech behind these live "performances" is quite impressive, however the implications of people going to see a "live" performance by a cartoon character with a synthetic voice is actually kind of depressing. Before, companies like Disney manufactured stars by recruiting them out of junior high and autotuning the crap out of their voices, but now the middleman has been completely removed.

I suppose. It sounds like it'll be short lived to me. But I guess the thought behind it is kinda cool.

Vocaloid's are a big thing in China/Japan/Korea, I doubt anyone's livelihood is going to be damaged by them. Disney's not going to stop recruiting it's fresh, faced prepubescents because of them. Especially since they were created to promote the Vocaloid software which is used by music artists. They're just fun little mascots, much like Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, but CGI and much nicer to look at with better voices. It's 'silly', yet that doesn't stop people from seeing things like 'Disney on Ice'.

Wasn't there a movie like this?
Where there was this famous person that wasn't even real?

I doubt, the fanbase is huge enough to support it.

God, my-ex was heavily into vocaloids. She would cosplay as Miku at Anime Expo all the time. I guess one blessing of her cheating on me is that I wont have to go to one of these concerts now lol.

Oh, I wasn't aware of the large fanbase. I've only ever seen these -- what did you call them, "vocaloids?" -- in sci-fi movies. Interesting.

Without Vocaloid, we would not have Poptart Cat.

I can't wait until we can have sex with holographic projections.

Hahaha, indeed.

Seriously though, if they could fine tune the voices and update the models every few years, we could get new singles from "The Beatles" or "Michael Jackson". Sure it wouldn't really be them and would be a cheap cash-in that might disrepect their name and image, but you never know what people might be willing to pay for.
