CGI Still Looks Pretty Bad

Wow what was so bad in Thor 2?

The entire opening cg battle scene...

looked like a straight to dvd version of lord of the rings.

This prob had in part to do with the company that did it. I believe it was Blur studios...who mainly ever do video game cinematics.

That scene was added very late in the game. Blur can do fantastic work, but basically no one would be able to pull that scene off with the time given.

CGI looks awesome, anyway it's all about the story lol.

Obviously, Hulk the giant green monster will never be completely "real" as we know it isn't real, now matter how good the CGI is.

Then again, Black Widow is CGI here also.

I thought there were alot of bad cgi shots in thor 2 outside of that opening scene. One that comes to mind is when asgard is attack by the elves.

I thought in avengers that the floating ship and lokis army looked noticably bad and fake.

Just recently pompeii as a whole looked bad and the green screen work at the end was laughble.

I didn't know she was CG in this shot. Kudos, ILM or whoever the **** did it.

I'll try and pull up the making of clip but yeah, the only parts of that shot that aren't CG is the plate shot of all the glass breaking.

Edit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnQLjZSX7xM Watch the first 30 seconds of this vid for a break down of that shot.

The Black Widow digital double works so much better than the Captain America they used in a few of the New York shots later on.

CGI Scarlet was used for the cgi shadows and as a collision for the broken parts IMO. i think its greenscreen footage when she runs.

I thoght that most of the cgi in pacific rim had looked good but this shot had m much stood out to me as being clearly cgi.

it was just how the lighting of the character didn't match the background.

She's real in that shot. She was shot in front of a green screen, the footage is in bonus features.

Yea, Tim Miller the owner of Blur directed it.

I don't remember that scene looking that way.

The cgi in the Hercules trailer looks terrible.

yesterday i watched Amazing Spiderman 2 in 3D. and the movie had an insane amount of film grain with the live action footage. i dont think i saw any modern movie with so much grain. the cgi alone looked realistic. but when it cut from grainy live action footage to clean 100% cgi new york and spiderman it looked strange.

it also looks like they used a little stylized lighting and atmosphere for the full cgi shots. yet the live action footage was just real footage.

i know that. but there was so much grain. i remember a shot of Peter and Gwen where the footage was almost flickering with spots.

wonder if it was a creative choice?

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but I watched Riddick a few days ago. It has some really outdated cgi. The creatures in it look like the cgi is at least 10-15 years old. However, the budget was really small compared to the huge tent pole films, so I didn't let it bother me.
