Interview with Director Bong

An excerpt about Evans

I want to ask about Chris Evans because I was incredibly impressed by what he does in this movie, more so than anything he's done before. How did you get that much out of him? Was he just committed to it? Did he believe in it and just give it his all? How did that happen?

Bong: Chris Evans, he's actually just a very, very sensitive guy. You don't notice that immediately because he's so muscular and strong. But he's actually very delicate. You have to approach him very carefully and almost protect him as you work.

He's an extremely intelligent guy. And he also looks at a film from the director's point of view. He's also a director. So sometimes he's just very, very focused and into the scene as an actor, especially the monologue where he talks about 17 years ago. The morning that they shot that scene, he just had this very focused feeling and he was just deep into it as he walked onto set. But then other times he'll [step] 10 feet back and see the whole situation as a director and come up with ideas or give his input. So he had this interesting way of going in really, really deep then also being able to step back. Of course, he made a film already, [titled] 1:30 Train [due out sometime in 2014/2015].

But, of course, his action, his physical stuff is just amazing. He's like an action machine. The stunt coordinator was shocked because his timing and precision was just unbeatable.

Reading negative user reviews for this on RT and meta critic are both hilarious and sad. "A lot of critics are going to lose their jobs because they all seem to like this movie" type comments.

Dat tunnel scene. Dat end monologue. Dat Evans. Man, this film was a slick beast. Bioshock on a train. I loved how the story just kept up its unrelenting pace. Revelation after the next. Seriously, go watch this knowing nothing. I had forgotten about this movie and saw it was playing near me and figured why not... I was not ready.

Overall rating: **** yes/10

I finally saw this. I had heard it was good, but damn I had no idea it'd be as good as it is.

For so much of the film, as more of the train is revealed, it becomes more and more bizarre. I love how about 20 minutes in the film itself just kind of announces "Oh by the way THIS MOVIE IS KOREAN!"

I loved almost all of the acting in this film. Chris Evans was great, as others have said, towards the end. Damn.

I loved this movie but at the same time, the very very end just didn't quite work but it doesn't undo the rest of the movie which is incredible.

So not to give too much away but the ending of this film

The end reveal in the engine and the description of Wilford's plan and even the secret involvment of John Hurt's character, grooming Curtis to maintain the system is pretty much just the Architect scene from the end of the Matrix Reloaded. That isn't a criticism as I think it pulls it off quite a bit better than Reloaded did.

Allison Pill was so bizarre in her scene.

Tilda Swinton was absolutely master class in this.

I'm convinced especially after this movie that Tilda Swinton is the female Gary Oldman.

Have you seen the video the two of them did together with David Bowie last year

Also Kane, what source did you use for your gifs?

Yeah....this was ****ing amazing. ****ING AMAZING! I haven't seen this much artistic ambition and sensibility ooze out this well in a genre film since The Dark Knight. Chris Evans is a great actor. I was wrong about him. He's not just a solid actor who fits Captain America perfectly. He's a damn good actor.

**** me, I love this film.

That moment when suddenly you can tell things are about to get extremely Korean.

Regarding the ending:

Is there any real proof that John Hurt's character was a part of the plan this whole time? I kind of interpreted it as Ed Harris talking out of his ass, lying to Evans to persuade him because, through his revolution, he gained respect for him and decided that he should take over the train when he's gone.

Why is the thread title Snow Piercer ? Its just one word.

Hard to say really. But if fits with the balanced system that Wilford created.

The presence of a telephone in Gilliam's berth would seem to confirm Wilford's story. At least to the audience.

I think it's up in the air. I remember Gilliam telling Curtis that when he reached Wilford to "cut out his tongue" which I took to mean that Gilliam was telling Curtis that Wilford was a master manipulator and not to fall for his slick words.

It kinda makes sense too. It gave them a much needed equilibrium that was founded in his leadership while still retaining a glimmer of hope. It's not like he wanted to play that dual role. He had too. It actually benefited them until a certain point.

When he understood this revolution was going to succeeded he clearly tells him to dont believe his lies. Maybe they weren't. Just an harsh truth.

Perhaps there is some truth to what Wilford said, but Gilliam deep down wanted the revolution to succeed and when Gilliam gains hope that Curtis may actually succeed in over-throwing Wilford, he tells him to cut out his tongue so he doesn't spill the beans to Curtis about Gilliam being in on it. Or maybe even Gilliam had a gut feeling that Curtis was different and he knew he would succeed so he told him this simply to save his own skin. Or perhaps its exactly how its stated in the movie and I just want the ending to be better than it actually is. lol

Gonna see this in an hour, I only saw the first trailer once when it first came out and haven't seen anything else since.

I think that Gillam was in on it the whole time for a variety of reasons:

1. As Evil Twin said about the telephone.
2. That Wilford used the same analogy as Gillam about using 2 hands to hold a a woman.
3. That Wilford and Mason both make comments about a closed ecological equilibrium that it would make sense that they had to quell the population.
4. Lastly, how else would they be familiar with Curtis's name and his other inner circle if Wilford never made it back to the tail section.

I saw this last night and I thought it was really good. Very well acted and I think Chris Evans's finest work and I loved Captain America: TWS.
