CHUD review of The Fountain

Half of me is glad he goes out of his way not so spoil anything, and the other half really really wants to find out exactly what he's talking about. I know it'll be better just to find out while watching it on the big screen though. If this thing really is the immense masterpiece it sounds like it will be, it'll be really cool to look at Aronofsky's three film evolution. From the amazingly sharp start with Pi, to the immensely strong sophmore effort with Requiem, to a third film of this calibur. Just imagine the kind of legacy this guy is going to leave. I really can't believe he's only three films into his career.

i'm glad he doesn't spoil anything.

i've been really pissed (with myself) lately for reading all the X3, pirate's, and superman returns spoilers. all those movies would have been so much better without them.

I'd like to see them not release a trailer. I think the teaser does a good job of portaying the scope and beauty of this film, without spoiling much as all and keeping it mysterious. I love the screensavers on the website as well.

I read the graphic novel that came out a few months ago and it was excellent, I had seriously high hopes for the film after I read it.

i have little to no knowledge of this film, even though i've been following it for a year or more.

and that's awesome. i'm going to hopefully be "shocked and awed" by what this film has to show me.

I think if they release another trailer, I'm just going to skip it. If I can resist.

eh... let em put out as many trailers as thay want, just avoid giving away the "twist"

I don't think there's a big twist, is there?

I'm glad, frankly I've gotten tired of twist movies. It's been a little overdone as of late.

believe me, this movie is anything BUT ordinary, it's a mind ****, it's brilliant, it's amazing, it's beautiful, deep, moving, entertaining, and insightful. I'm basing that on the GN, but using that, the director and what I've seen of the cinematography I think it's a fairly accurate assessment.

Did he actually write the graphic novel?

Yeah, if you know anything about the history of this project it's been picked up and dropped a number of times, well one of the times it was dropped it turned into the GN, Arronofsky wrote it (because he felt it was a story he waned to tell quite badly, so if it wasn't going to be a film he'd damn sure at least get it out there) and then the movie was greenlit again and a few things were changed (budget reasons) but in the foreward (I think) Darren mentions how this is his idealized version of the story but ultimately not the exact one we'll see on the screen. Personally I think it's perfectly suited to film and if they don't add uneccesary exposition or really mess with the premise it'll transition quite nicely, I have serious faith in this project, but knowing the general movie-goer I doubt it'll do big bussiness.

I dunno, throw out a "by the director of Requiem for a dream" and I think you'd see more people excited for it than you might expect. That movie's garnerned a pretty big following even among Joe Q Public. I rarely ever run into someone that hasn't seen and loved it, even if they're not the kind of person I'd expect to ever find a movie in that vein.

I hope this movie will be great

I like the main idea of the whole movie.

And that is truly sad. Ive lost faith in the general movie goer, it seems they are happy with crap and hey if they go to see crap the studios are going to keep making crap.:(

Ive been anxiously awaiting this film since the Pitt days and Im so relieved its going to see the light of day. Thank god for WB right now, they seem to be the one major studio giving movies to directors and letting them find their own vision.

Well, I think The Fountain will make about $57m, what isn't so bad.

For movies like The Fountain and The Prestige the most important in success is critical and getting Oscar Awards.

Jeez

but for me the question about The Fountain isn’t “Is this one of the best films made in decades?” but “What are the handful of films in my lifetime as beautiful and profound as this one?”

Did that picture not link up right?

edit - guess I needed to host it myself

That poster is inspired.

Man, when is it coming out and please tell me it's not a limited release. :o
