I need some help with the civil war storyline going on in marvel. What exactly is this civil war about or what is it over? How does certain characters fit into it such as spider-man, captain america, iron man, wolverine & so on? I would really apreciate the help, Thanks.

The civil war is based around the superhuman registration act, like with mutant registration this forces all superheroes to register with governement, secret identity/power/etc.

The run up to this can be seen in

asm 529-531
new avengers:iluminati

and

ff 536-537 (although this is more about the possible(yeah as if it's not happening) return of thor.

SPOILERS

[spoilers]
The act is brought in after a LOT of innocent people are killed when the new warriors try to take down a group of supervillains on national telly, a group including NITRO. Nitro blows killing the aforementioned innocents including 600 children.

Essentially the problem stems from the fact that superheroes are split down the middle on this one.

You've got iron man leading the pro-registration camp

Spidey has joined iron-man because in exchange for the new costume stark seems to have demanded pete's balls as payment, although all signs indicate that spidey will at some critical juncture change sides.

Cap is leading the anti registration side, basically he was asked by shield to hunt down superheroes that wouldn't register, cap was willing to go along with it till that point but couldn't bring himself to hunt down his friends and "co-workers". (also he feels the government shouldn't be allowed to decide who they fight which is fair enough really cause tin-pot dictators who have large oil reserves can't really be classed as super-villains!)

Wolverine is tracking down nitro who was responsible for the stamford incident but again signs point that someone else was behind it and that nitro is only a pawn.

Basically you to get the story you need

Civil war 1-7
Civil war frontline 1-10
Wolverine 42-47
ASM 529-537
New avengers 21-25

optional stuff includes

Civil war:x-men (four-issue miniseries)
Civil War: Young Avengers & Runaways (four-issue miniseries)
Black Panther #18
Cable/Deadpool #30-32
Captain America #22-24
Daily Bugle: Civil War Edition (one-shot newspaper)
Fantastic Four #538-543
Heroes for Hire #1-3
Iron Man v4 #13-14
Marvel Spotlight: Millar/McNiven (one-shot)
Ms. Marvel #6-8
Punisher: War Journal volume 2 #1-3
She-Hulk v2 #8
Thunderbolts #103-105
X-Factor #8-9

I won't say any more cause it'll ruin it for you but this is cannon and unless they come up with a really lame ending this will be one crossover that has major effects on the MU for a LONG time[/spoilers]

That should get you started!

sounds like something norman osborn or the kingpin would do but can it be EITHER of them?

Thanks, this info has been very helpful. Sounds like this storyline is gonna kick some major A**!

Well they got joss whedon himself to pick the ending and he's never let me down so far!

Joss Whedon is a god.
NO!
He is God.

Civil War is just about destroying great character. Marvel owns.

i'm afraid you're right about that

I don't know. Tony's lied before in the prologue in quite a big way, I think he (or evil tony, or extremis via tony) may have had something to do with stamford. Norman is definately not behind this though, look at his reaction to spidey's big moment.

HOLY Crap, I forgot about Extremis.
Maybe he IS Caesar.

All the evil has been implied with tony so far, I'll be interested to see how they do him and spidey's break-up. It's like he's cheating on MJ or something! :o

Tony: I've made you a new costume
Pete: Nice one tony, what do I owe you
Tony: Only your ballsand your dignity pete, oh... and I'd like you to put this stuffed bird that is in no way a camera in your room so I can spy on your wife's rude bits

That is creppy.

The kingpin doesn't care about stuff like that he isn't really a manipulator. Osborn has never been a huge Marvel villain. I think there is a small list of candidates that could be behind it. here is my list
Dr. Doom- he is the most likely, the man is a huge manipulator. He would love to see the heroes fighting each other so he could come in and pick up the pieces and take over the world.
Baron Zemo- he hates Captain America and the Avengers but could he pull something like this off?'
Ultron, he has been very quiet.
I can't think of anyone else off hand.

thanks i must've been thinking of thr s-m tas kingpin

The return of Onslaught, he's taken over Xavier again and is just using people to get some of his work done, because he doesn't want to get dominated again like last time.

I have a question.
I haven't gotten CW: Front Line 3 yet.
I read on Ign that Speedball is head in a new direction.
Without spoilers, could you tell if he turning into a villain or is it something different?

Imo ... so far Civil War has been highly entertaining.

Makes up for Infinite boredom.

I haven't been picking up comics for the longest time since I went to college. Only recently I had the urge to. And one of the titles I recently picked up is Civil War. I must say that so far, two issues in, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Can't wait for the rest.
