Click it or ticket - Oh my gawd! They really DO care!

This is really a dumb law. I understand the intention, but then again there could be a law to ban McDonald's because more people die of heart disease and diabetes a year than car crashes. I wear my seatbelt all the time anyways, because it is smart, but I think it's a little excessive. In my opinion there are more pressing matters that should require a police force's time than giving out tickets for unbuckled seatbelts.

For under 18 drivers, I think it should be illegal to not wear their seatbelts as of course they are not legal in the eyes of the law/consenting adults so I wouldn't mind getting pulled over to make sure I was 18 and of course a friendly reminder that a seatbelt could save my life. A fine is dumb.

This literally made me lol and say "what the ****" at the same time. Well, from this thread you take seatbelts very seriously. Maybe you're one of the non skilled drivers I was talking about, and I offended you? Ohh well. Buckle up kid.
Battlecat, I think SuperheroHype is too waaaaack for you. You should go post somewhere else.

I can see a policy like this being implemented for minors under 18 and seat belts being mandatory in manufacture of vehicles, but after this it really should be left as a matter of choice and concern for one's own individual risk.

Exactly. I wear my seatbelt because its smart. I would wear it if there was no law. The point is it should be a choice.

I would also have no problem with insurance not having to "pay out" if you are not wearing one. You should be able to choose not wear one but that doesn't mean others have to bail you out.

Like the above poster said, if you want to really save lives then start fining people for eating fast food, smoking, or drinking. People obviously can't make good eating decisions on their own right? Think about all that extra money its costing families when your having open heart surgury or lifetime meds. I say its in the best interest of everyone if the government makes the decision for us. Soda's have to go as well, or rather, lets fine people 100$ if they are caught with a Big Mac or Coke.

We'll raise more money........er........I mean save more lives that way.

True, it should be a choice....but the fact is, it is not a choice it is the law.

I think it should be a law, as well as the texting and cell phone stuff mentioned earlier. Humans are stupid creatures and should be protected from themselves and each other.

Well the texting and cellphone stuff is different....you are endangering other drivers when you do that stuff.....not wearing a seatbelt you are just endangering yourself, just like the helmet law.

I know, but still, people do need to be controlled.

No they don't, know needs or should control me in choices that are for myself only....not for choices that will only be of harm to me. That is a choice I would make for myself, but it is one that I should be able to make for myself. It doesn't hurt anyone else...

I think that line of thinking is pretty silly.

I find the line of thinking that some bureaucrat or politician in Washington (or Nashville) knows how to take care of me better than I do or to make better choices for me than I can is pretty silly.

I wasn't aware that working in government automatically bestowed great amounts of intelligence or wisdom on anyone . . .

I know, but still, people do need to be controlled.

How very Orwellian of you . . . :o

And let me guess: you know what's best for us, right? And, you believe in using the force of government to mandate it . . . for our own best interest, right?

Personally, I think eating healthy and exercising regularly is what's best for a person (and medical science backs that up). Yet, I wouldn't dream of forcing individuals to do either one through government or any other means. People should have the freedom to make choices for themselves--to reap the rewards for those choices. And yes, to suffer the consequences as well.

You will never legislate negative consequences out of existence, but you can legislate liberty away. As long as I get the latter, I'll take my chances on the former.

And yes, I wear a seatbelt and believe it stupid to not do so.

No one said it did.

And yet you imply it by saying that "people need to be controlled." What else is a mandated seatbelt law BUT government saying "I know better than you and have made this choice for you?"

Where have I said that I know better or that any ruler does? I am still human, like the rest of you.

Personally, I wear a seatbelt all the time, and I don't care if anyone else does. If they do, that's fine, they're watching out for themselves. If not, then hopefully they'll die before they can breed.

Except a lot of laws, like the seat belt law, are started by the people. So if you don't like it, take actions to get it removed.

Be as skilled as you want. The other guy who slams into you because he wasn't paying attention should be reason enough to wear the seatbelt.

Again, if I was your insurance company, and you weren't wearing a belt, I wouldn't give you a dime towards your medical expenses. That's why the law is unnecessary. A $100 ticket isn't going to get anyone to wear their belt if their rarely caught. Thousands of dollars in medical bills and lost work time should be incentive enough.

Thats exactly how I feel about the situation. If you are an adult there is no need for the government to nanny you. The ironic thing is I usually always wear my seatbelt, I was just really stressed out because I had an exam I was driving to and it must have completely skipped my mind. Its funny because they're so quick to give out hefty $104 fines. To me its so obvious they're trying to just make cash on people.

And just for the record, I think everyone should absolutely wear a seat belt. I should have worn a seat belt too but I don't understand why the government feels the need to punish me for something that involves no one but me. Whats next? Should I get a ticket for leaving my shoes untied.

What state are you in? Because here in California, they can't pull you over for not wearing one, but they can tack it onto the ticket if they pull you over for something else. At least, that's the way it used to be.

How hard is it to put on a seat-belt. Jesus Christ I mean come on it takes 5 seconds and it can save your life and the people who have the clean your body up time and patience.

The funny thing is, I said i wear mine. So what are you on about?

I don't care if you think I'm being stupid for not wearing my seat belt...I think thats nobody's business but mine.

No, it was over a seat belt. I don't even know if its legal now that you've mentioned it.

So you think the govt should tell me how much I should care about my life? If I don't put a seatbelt on I don't harm anyone else but myself.

Well, when you go flying through your windshield into my lane of traffic and I wreck trying to avoid your flying carcass then, yes, it is a problem. This happened on the interstate near my house. One person wasn't wearing a seat belt and they went through the windshield into the oncoming lane of traffic, and the oncoming car wrecked trying to avoid the body. Mulitple lives lost, because someone couldn't be bothered to strap in. Also, you become a deadly object to the other people in your car when your body is flung around the cabin in the event of a rollover. If you want to drive follow the rules. Simple as that. If you want to break the law, and you get caught there is no one to blame except yourself.

Let's not pretend we don't break traffic laws at some point.
