Common Sense Wins One Battle!!

Isn't pork and other non-kosher/halal food kinda expensive and luxurious anyways? I'd think it would be an easier punishment if the only food was kosher. Have you ever been to an Orthodox Jew's house for a meal during Passover? It's ****ing torture.
Yes, I have, and it's always been ****ing delicious. You went to the wrong house.

The Muslim and Jewish inmates are still allowed to pray. Hell, it's nearly impossible to stop them. As long as a Muslim can find East, he can pray in his cell, if need be. That comparison was just... off.
Not if you had even a vague idea of what kashrut means to a Jew.

Kashrut goes beyond pork. There are specific preparations and blessings that go into it. Forcing a man to violate his religion does not seem to me to be a very good method of engendering trust and respect for the system.

Well, we both know that in reality it's purpose is to BOTH punish and reform. It's not either/or. I think we've gone a little light on the punishment part in recent times, though.
Really? Go to prison, ignoramus.

Then if he wants a special diet, don't commit a crime where you get sent to jail.

Forgetting for a moment that crime is so high because of the way the system is set up, can we try to think just in your selfish objectivist conservative terms for a moment? If you dehumanize an inmate, if you tell him he's a good-for-nothing little **** who's totally worth because of the mistake he made, he's going to come back out and do the same thing. That's basic psychology. So if you want to see crime, specifically recidivism, go down, start treating these people as if they were people. I know it takes a bit of imagination for people like you to treat the poor as if they were human beings, but give it a shot. It's like pretending to be in a good mood. Eventually, if you pretend you think the poor are human beings, you might just end up believing it.

As I understand it, kosher means that the meal cannot contain pork or any animal that has hooves. Also, the animals must be slaughtered a certain way, and the utensils used to prepare the meal cannot have also been used to prepare non-kosher food. I've never heard any vegetarian constraints, as far as kosher meals go. I could be way off, but the only "blessings" I'm aware a kosher meal needs is that it be confirmed as kosher by a rabbi.

It has nothing to do with the poor. It has to do with a dumbass breaking the law, and getting sent to jail but then wanting special treatment because of a nonsensical belief.

Yes. It needs blessings. No matter what it is. Just serving veggie food does not equal kosher.

Zim zala bim zala bim. There you go. Now eat your spinach

It has nothing to do with the poor.
It has everything to do with the poor. Do the sociological research before you spout off your ridiculous O'Reilly Factor opinions.

Say that when you've been poor, and forced to choose between starving and stealing. Rich pricks like you are a cancer on society. When the end comes, it will be your kind that brings it about.

It's not about who's getting special treatment. It's about treating people with some respect so that when they get out, they won't have a vendetta against the system. In prison systems were the focus is on humanization and on reform, recidivism is DRAMATICALLY lower.

But you don't care about pesky facts and figures, do you? You shoot from the gut. You're all about truthiness, not truth.

I hope you are not religious. Because if you are, the idea of making fun of Judaism and calling it nonsensical and silly is pretty ****ing hypocritical.

I don't listen to the Big Giant Head except when he makes Keith Olbermann's Worst Person in the World list so I can laugh at the nonsense that O'Reilly said.

And I don't care about criminals. If they wanted respect, then they certainly aren't going to merit any by breaking the law.

I find all religions/cults/myths to be nonsensical.

First of all, your grammar is atrocious. Second, you get there by violating the local law. Nobody is going to go to jail for eating pork.

No one said you went to jail for eating pork! If my grammar is bad, your reading comprehension skills are worse.

And no one goes to jail in the U.S. for violating their religious beliefs.

Try some of the countries in the Middle East for that

it's okay to pressure muslims into violating their faith, but God forbid the prison system force Christains to violate their belief. The jails around here even have Christain sunday church services for the prisoners. How is that cost effective?

Wow. Great discussion point. At least you're here to engage in interesting, meaningful intellectual discourse rather than stroke your own sensitive ego by insulting people and trying to convince yourself that you're somehow superior to them by flashing your pseudo-intellect at everyone like a raincoated pervert in the park or anything. :whatever:

It's the government dude. They don't know the meaning of "cost effective"

wow, aristotle is a pompous *****e. his hollier-than-thou act is highly comical.

But how many kosher meals does a Jew need to eat in one day? I imagine there are quite a few practicing Jews not in prison who adhere to the necessary rules of food preparation, but don't run to their nearest rabbi everytime they're ready to eat.

I think his attitude is unintentional...he's probably just reiterating the lessons he just received in his 9th and 10th grade Sociology and Psychology classes. Give him time to mature beyond his teenage years; I'm sure he'll grow up a bit. :woot:

*Either that or he got stealing Pokemon cards from the local 7-Eleven and is fighting to make sure he's not raped in prison.*

And it's not like the jewish prisoner will know whether the food was prepared properly anyway.

I love the 'didn't they violate their religious beliefs before they got the prison' argument.

Not everyone in jail is guilty, but you have to break a few eggs right?

if prisoners were forced to take the lord's name in vein before they were allowed to eat, people would be pissed.

it just so happens that this is a case where the religious belief in question is one that Christians have no problem rolling their eyes at.

I've never been one to come and back up Slim, but even I have to point out everything wrong with that "what if" statement.

The Muslim and Jewish inmates are still allowed to pray. Hell, it's nearly impossible to stop them. As long as a Muslim can find East, he can pray in his cell, if need be. That comparison was just... off.

Also, the vegan and vegetarian meals are still available at the prison. Catholics wouldn't be forced to eat meat on Fridays. Hell, as is stands now, Muslims and Jews can choose those meals. Nobody is being forced to eat pork or violate kosher/halal traditions. They have options.

Did you not read the article? And you miss the point of what I was saying. The prison is deliberately doing something that prevents them from practicing a part of their religion, which some people take very seriously. I brought up what I did because I really don't believe Cellslim would be so smug about this if a change in policy didn't allow Christians to practice an aspect of their faith. Oh, and the meat on Fridays bit, we call that a "hypothetical situation".
