This has probably been brought up numerous times, but has there ever been a film whose ending left you completely and utterly confused, that you simpy didn't understand and wracked your brain trying to come up with ever possible explanation?

For me, it's the ending to The Shining, the last shot of Jack in the picture with the other residents of The Overlook. I've heard several theories about it, one being that Jack Torrance was a reincarnation of the original caretaker, another being that spirits from the Indian burial ground that The Overlook were the ones haunting it all along, and had consumed Jack.

What about you guys?

I always thought it was the spirits of the Overlook haunting Jack into his madness.

There's been several theories, as I've stated. imdb has a few good threads on it.

This thread of course isn't about the ending to The Shining, even if it is quite possibly the most confusing ending ever.

Star Wars ROTS. Why the hell did Padme die? And how did Leia remember her? I don't understand how one can mess up a script whose ending is already a film! Lucas is such an idiot in that respect.

That and the fact that he let his greed get in the way of his focus. That being said, I enjoyed ROTS. It's certainly better than its predecessors, though the ending is a massive flaw and a bit confusing.

I always thought that it signified that Jack had NOW become one of the various spirits that will now occupy the building and torment the next caretaker?

Oh and a movie with a confusing ending? 2000 Planet of the Apes...WTF?

The theories:

1) Thade (the bad ape) went through time and changed history so that apes rule the modern world or...

2) Marky Mark is creating the vision of apes thorough his own self concious and that those are actually human beings hes staring at...ala HE WENT CUCKOO

The only thing Planet of the Apes proved is the one who went cuckoo is Tim Burton.

I always thought that him going in after the monkey f**ked up the time-stream already, and him coming back to Earth made it worse.

Primer...and not just the ending, the entire god damn movie :o

I've given up on trying to understand Primer. Some people just have too much time on their hands when it comes to writing these scripts!

That's very good......I never thought of that. Burton should have perhaps implied that.

The end of the movie though is supposed to be confusing. It's a Twilight Zone scenario. You're supposed to think, "How the hell did this nightmare happen?" Just like Marky Mark.

Movie endings that confused the hell outta me:

-"Entrapment". So Sean Connery is a thief, and Catherine Zeta-Jones is an agent sent to capture him. But really Sean is out to capture Catherine because she was a thief, but Sean really was a thief, but he's not, but...

Too confusing for me to handle.

-"2001: A Space Odyssey". To be fair, everything that happened after HAL died confused me to no end.

-"Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". The plot hadmore twists and turns than a frickin Six Flags rollercoaster.

-Tim Burton's "Planet of the Apes". I'm STILL not sure wether Earth is or isn't the Planet of the Apes in the remake.

-"Men in Black 2". Just WTF?

-"Identity". So, was there, or wasn't a killer? Just WTF happened at that motel?

There was no motel. None of it really happened. It's about split personality.

YES! I remember when I saw Primer, I went crazy. I still haven't figured it out. Maybe I should watch it with commentary, but I doubt it would help.

It ended that he finally got back with the girl..it turned out to be a happy ending actually.

1-About "Identity": then why did those doctors say that he really did kill someone? And then they showed those mug shots of the victims to him. But he's really not the killer, so...

I just couldn't follow it.

2-"Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless MInd": when we first see Jim Carrey, he meets Kate Winslet at a train. They fall in love, but then they break up. She goes to Lacunas to wipe out all memories of him, and then he retaliates by doing the same. But when they show his memories, the train is nowhere to be seen and they meet at a beach. Which means that they met, fell in love, and wiped their memories of each other, only to meet AGAIN, fall in love AGAIN, and wiped out the memories of each other AGAIN.

See? Too complicated for me to follow.

Okay. You a have a genuine killer, a man about to be put on death row. A doctor argues that the man is insane and therefore cannot be held responsible for his actions. Through therapy, the doctor finds out that the man has numerous different personalities in his head, and makes him eliminate them all, one by one. In the man's head, this is represented by a motel where all the personalities are made flesh and are all killed off, one by one.

the ending of guy ritchie´s Revolver was pretty cofusing... i loved the movie, but i´ll have to rewatch it.

and how could i forget Mullholand Dr. ...
and Eraserhead...
but that´s David Lynch, and i guess he has a "WTF??" category of his own...

He was a thief. He was working with the Feds in exchange for immunity.

anyone saw Holy Blood, The Mole or The Sacred Mountain by Jodorowsky?

I didn`t read any of the above films but i know for a fact

Revolver beats them all hands down!

American Psycho was like "Whoa wait a minute..... so he imagined all this at the Maccaroni Grill?"
