Warner Bros. considering The Shining prequel

No Shining prequel if it's up to King

It's been reported that Glen Mazzara was writing the script for the prequel for The Shining and now King has commented on it...

“There’s a real question about whether or not they have the rights to ‘Before the Play,’ which was the prologue cut from the book — because the epilogue to the book was called ‘After the Play.’ So they were bookends, and there was really scary stuff in that prologue that wouldn’t make a bad movie. Am I eager to see that happen? No I am not. And there’s some real question about what rights Warner Bros. does still have. The Shining is such an old book now that the copyright comes back to me. Arguably, the film rights lapse — so we’ll see. We’re looking into that.

I’m not saying I would put a stop to the project, because I’m sort of a nice guy. When I was a kid, my mother said, ‘Stephen if you were a girl, you’d always be pregnant.’ I have a tendency to let people develop things. I’m always curious to see what will happen. But you know what? I would be just as happy if it didn’t happen.”

Well put Steve.

With the success of Bate's Motel and Hannibal, just a make a tv series.

Alfonso Cuaron Offered "Shining" Prequel?

By Garth Franklin Thursday May 22nd 2014 11:42AM
Earlier this week came word that "Gravity" director Alfonso Cuaron has been linked to potentially return to the "Harry Potter" franchise at the helm of the upcoming spin-off film "Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them" at Warner Bros. Pictures.
Today, Schmoes Know claims that Cuaron has also been approached about another project in development at the studio - a prequel to Stanley Kubrick's film adaptation of the Stephen King horror novel classic "The Shining".
Titled "The Overlook Hotel," the site claims that Warners has essentially offered the project to Cuaron and "the ball is in Alfonso’s court". Former "The Walking Dead" showrunner Glen Mazzara is writing the script.
Laeta Kalogridis ("Avatar," "Shutter Island"), Bradley Fischer ("Black Swan," "Zodiac") and James Vanderbilt ("Zodiac," "The Amazing Spider-Man") are already set to produce.

****. I would have to watch that.

This sounds like a bad idea. Well it sounded like one... until Cuaron's name popped up.

The Shining is a well made movie, but may i ask why so many put it in the top of best Horror film lists? I don't think it was scary at all, neither do i know anyone who found it to be like that.

If Cuaron is in the project, then i'm certainly interested.

In the novel, King painted a lot of the Overlook's back story; and as a limited print, he released an excised chapter called Before the Play, which contained Prequel-y elements (It was in a Reader's Digest Preview book, if I recall correctly.) If they get somebody as talented as Bryan Fuller on board with this project, it could be dynamite.

It's a Stanley Kubrick movie. It may not be that scary but it's a very eery and unsettling movie.

This reminded me of the rumor going around back in 2008-2009 where Christopher Nolan was interested in remaking The Shining with Christian Bale in the lead.

Supernatural horror and Nolan would not work well together; his work is decidedly secular. The only way he would be able to adapt the novel would be to emphasize the psychological thriller component of the novel and use it to explain the supernatural, which would be great....except we already had a perfect film that did that by one of the kings of cinema.

Point taken. But ignore The Shining for a minute, and I do think Nolan would completely own a Horror movie.

I wouldn't care about this if it wasn't for Romanek, now I do.

The question is..is he going to stick around. He's constantly walking away from projects.

Well yeah, there is that. I would have loved to have seen his Wolfman.

I mean, I love his style and he's very Kubrick (or rather, he's very Fincher too). But he often signs on to a major release only to leave because of creative differences.

I hope WB signed him up because HE IS more of a cerebral type.

I think he just wants his way creatively and won't bow down to the studio system. Which is unfortunate for us fans. I agree, love his style and wish he'd do more.

Didn't they just announce Cuaron? Can they make their f**** minds? That announcement was basicaly ignored.

An offer isn't an announcement.
