So we were talking about the possibility of making contact with another civilization in my Astronomy class and discussed the extent of radio communications... it just got me thinking about this movie... when you think alien movies you usually think UFO's blowing up the joint, teenagers riding flying bicycles, man eating monsters, or boogeymen making crop circles... but this movie went away from that... its probably the most accurate movie ever made depicting how first contact might actually be made and the next steps our race might take in due course... I really think something like that is the closest thing to how it might actually go down were we to make actual contact with another civilization... ofcourse a lot of things in the movie were cheesy... from Clinton's speeches... to the cheesy transport... ya the movie had holes... but it still was a movie... I really enjoyed this a lot... Foster is terrific as usual and the ending is just brilliant... those of you who saw it what did you think

yea it was a great movie, i'm thinking about gonna watch it now

It hasn't aged well, but when it first came out I loved it.
We had it at the theater where I worked and I'd watch it a lot.

I watched it and thought "Damn, when that Jenna Malone hits 18 I've got to hit that!"

I liked the blind guy, and the tycoon guy, and was of course very disappointed that the alien appeared as her father...not only because I wanted to see an Alien alien, but also, it seemed stupid, like, wouldn't it occur to the aliens that seeing her Dead father might be traumatic for Jodie Foster, and that it was very creepily dishonest?

In closing, I am grateful to "Contact" because I have gotten many huge laughs over the years by pulling out the ".....They should've sent a POET!" line at unexpected times.

One of the most boring movies I can recall watching.

Dirty monkey!

I liked the blind guy,

William Fitchner in one of his few "nice guy" roles. He was great.

I didn't feel it was a film where we needed to see an "alien" alien, 'cause sometimes it works (Close Encounters) and sometimes it doesn't (Mission To Mars), and when it doesn't work, it can really take you out of the film if that film is meant to be more of a drama than just straightforward sci-fi. As for whether or not it'd be traumatic to see an alien in the form of a long dead loved one, I chalk it up to movie logic. You're just happy to have some image of that loved one, and you hold onto it. And her father really inspired her to be the person she was, someone who fought hard to prove that there was intelligent life beyond humanity.

Now that was one awful alien movie... the buildup to that scene was tense... and then they sh:tted on everyone and everything

i just watched part of contact last night, and its such a great movie

I love Contact, another great Zemeckis movie. I especially love John Hurt's small role in it "wanna take a ride".

I've never seen it, but I hear good things about it. Somebody at work said that it had a pretty cool opening scene as well. Maybe i'll rent it this weekend, I love Science fiction!

I haven't had the chance to watch it yet but the idea is interesting

its neat how they put in bill clinton, i wonder how they did that

I know it's cheez-goose-bumpy, but how can you not become happy and silently cheer when he says that?

just got done rewatching this and i gotta say that this movie makes me want to read the book. i genuinely think the movie (because of the book it was based on) was ahead of it's time. it really gets my imagination going.

i love almost every second of this movie...from Ellie's flashbacks to her fights with Drumlin to her trip into space. it's practical science put into a realistic science fiction. Carl Sagan truly was a genius and i wish he could've been alive to see the complete film and i commend Robert Zemeckis for being open-minded enough to make it. it makes me want 2012 to arrive already.

i thought it was alright, not great but not horrible. its doubtful i will be watching it again, but a couple parts in it were pretty badass. and the ending was weak if you ask me, or a lot of other people for that matter.

I rather like that movie. It's a great down to earth look at how that sort of situation might go down. The whole look at faith, and faith in science is very interesting. I love how they come across the plans for the machine and put it all together.

Fantastic film, and one of those rare movies where I think they actually improved on the source material with that much more private finale, instaed of having a whole team of people go into the amchine. Although changing Mattie McC's character into a former priest who screws Ellie didn't really add anything to the narrative at all, and just seemed nonsensical.
