Probably because they don't know what the recovery rate is compared to the flu. If you can get it once and then never have to really worry about it then it probably wouldn't be as much of an issue.

Assuming you can't get this thing twice. We need people to get it to build up antibodies and drive down future flare ups.

Flu we have vaccines and some measures against.

Problem is if everyone gets it all at once it'll overwhelm the system. Again with Flu we have measures in place to prevent the system from being overwhelmed.

Think about it a moment. Has the news ever reported that the hospitals are turning away flu patients and running out of coffins to bury them in? No.....because those 30,000 to 500,000 deaths are spread out over the year. The Covid-19 is filling up the hospitals inmass....it is killing the amount of people who would normally die from the regular flu in a half the year in a few weeks. That is the difference.

Because the nhs can handle that many cases. Add in a few thousand corona cases everyday and it breaks down. We also have vaccines for flu to mitigate it's effects on the most vulnerable.

We are only just beginning with corona. If we do nothing it will get exponentially bigger. With millions getting it and possibly a million dying in the uk alone.

I think we will always need some healthy skepticism on any Chinese govt. announcements.

Also... People in China have been living with this and being miserable for months. Between their govt. having usually very brutal methods and the issues of months on lockdown, I hope Chinese people aren't starting to underreport cases.

This happens, especially in authoritarian regimes. Local functionaries don't care much for the common folk. They care about looking good to a central government so before you know it a bunch of officials start fudging numbers... And we are back to square one. And we don't what the treatment at the hand of the government day to day is like for those infected. Or if rumors are circulating about what is "really" happening to the sick. For all we know citizens are reticent to come forward and admit they have it. I could see those being more than possible.
