Corona and other diseases

Well sh*t. My sister is about to move to germany for the 2nd time as her husband is in the military and being stationed there.

My mother is considering cancelling her cruise trip in the summer

Where to? So far East Germany has the vast majority of cases, worst in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Not sure. Will have to find out for sure and make sure they know

This would've made a helluva episode of The Twilight Zone.

How is it spreading so much? Is it that easily contagious by contact?

It transmits like normal flu, i.e. through droplets (talking, coughing, sneezing near each other) and by contact (shaking hands/ touching door handle that has virus on its surface and then touching your face). However it spreads much more quickly because (1) incubation period is long and the infected could feel completely healthy, showing no symptoms and therefore go on infecting dozens or hundreds people.

On 21 January, the alleged patient 1 in Italy met a friend (alleged patient 0) who had returned from China. He only felt unwell on February 14, went to 3 different clinic/ hospitals on February 14, 16 and 18 and was only tested and diagnosed on February 19 when his wife remembered his meeting with the friend. Because of his 3 trips to the hospitals and his very active social life, all without any precaution/ prevention, Italian authority traced his contact and now after less than 2 weeks the number of cases in Italy jumped from 3 to over 2000.

Obviously not every infected case in Lombardi could be traced back to him but he's the one causing the majority of this cluster.

Wow it really is like the Rise of the Planet of the Apes scene!

My wife and I are supposed to fly out to Miami/Key West, Florida for vacation in the first week of April.

I know that, in reality, we will probably be totally fine and we are relatively young people, but this whole situation has just really put a damper on the thought of traveling. Going through the 2 airports in heavily populated cities twice (to and from), 2 plane trips, waking around with all kind of people wearing masks and ****, etc.

We're going to wait 2 weeks to decide whether or not we cancel the trip.

I wouldn't travel right now because security is even worse than usual, don't know who you're sitting close to on a plane and tourism Indonesia places suck right now a s so it would all be such a downer

Well got news this morning while i was at work that now someone has it in the town that is only about 20 minutes from me.

I’m in England, and people at my uni are so unbothered by everything, it’s unreal.

We literally have a coronavirus case in the town next to us and legit nobody cares.

My mother is travelling all over the place atm (including Italy) and REALLY doesn’t care.

And then the news and internet is pretty much blaring at me that the end is nigh, so colour me confused and lost, because I’m a tired uni student who doesn’t understand what’s going on 90% of the time.

There's a million things out there that can kill us. No point living in fear.

Our first case didn't stay home from a work event so now we have another case

Affected with a major virus or not, some just don't give a damn. Courtesy for others goes out the window

I also think it’s pure necessity. Many people literally can’t afford to take multiple days off work. Especially restaurant/fast food workers. It’s not like they get paid time off, and for many of them missing a week of work means not paying rent.

To quote Spock, “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.”

You not only might get worse cause you’re not resting, you’re now causing others to miss work and not pay rent as well.

I'll be traveling to Europe. Have a couple of masks, anti-bacteria stuff. Gonna wipe down any seat and try and be vigilant on not touching things/washing my hands etc. But, Lilbaz is right, you can't live in fear.

I have been fortunate not to get sick and miss work in a few years. I do try to avoid going into work sick and depending on the company/boss it is either fine or you get a response like I am taking a ****ing vaction instead of coming down with a potentially contagious disease that might put everyone out of work for a week.

Where in europe? I'd give italy a miss. Not for the risk of the virus but it will be a pain going anywhere after. You'll be tested to death and have a really long time in airport immigration.

Came across these charts in a YouTube video on this very subject. I haven't double checked the figures but they seem about right. Sorry about the wonkiness as I photographed them from my TV.

Has to be. There is no way nearly 1600 people in the U.S. die every day of malaria. And several of those parenthesize the United States implying the rest are global.

Is there an official coronavirus update website or something? Cases and deaths keeps rising every day and so it's hard to keep track
